Photobucket
F.Y.I.:
For those who use Photobucket to host ePlaya pictures, and all the ePlayans who expect to see these pictures:
Photobucket has been down all day. According to their Facebook page, they took it down for normal maintenance last night, and ran into trouble. Two hours ago -- 2 p.m.ish Friday California time -- they posted words to the effect of "still working on it".
So, It Is Not Your Fault.

It was partially working for a while. Now it seems to finally be OK.

Re: Photobucket is down
Agree Photobucket hopelessly buggy. I am no longer able to load images to Photobucket at all. But most of the time it delivers the existing images to ePlaya and such.
We have a discussion going on another thread, where Tumblr and Imgur are being recommended, and I'm currently using PictureTrail.
Next time you photograph the howl, you might try having howling people in the foreground, for a more effective image. (Free advice, and worth every penny.)

Re: Photobucket is down
Resurrecting this thread.
Photobucket announced a few days ago that they now charge $400 a year, or $40 per month if paying monthly, for "3rd party hosting", which is what we mostly use on forums like this. (As I understand it, ePlaya itself can host photos, but only a few.)
Those of us who already pay Photobucket a small sum to banish ads from our screens are good thru 2018.
I have 947 photos on Photobucket. Many of them are in regular use on other forums, such as my "how to" articles on various subjects.
Not sure what to think.... Except... Photobucket has obviously been on the ropes for a long time. This must be a "Hail Mary pass" at an unprecedented level of desperation.
But I'm betting two bits that Facebutt will buy Photobankrupt within days. Or... a whole new industry may emerge to replace Photobucket -- transfer new links to forums and all that sort of thing that will be needed when most folks refuse to pay $40 a month blackmail.

Re: Photobucket is down
Egads! So does that mean that all of the many photos, cartoons, original art, etc. that we photobucket users have posted to eplaya over the years will some day soon be kaput, and replaced by little broken picture icons of some sort?
Or is it just a concern going forward.

Yes, unless you pay them $400 a year.
Just look at some old gangster movies.... "So... youse pays me $40 each month, and maybe youse store won't burn down."

I've been using imgur, it has been much easier. I am not even sure what I have on photobucket anymore, or if I can even still access the account. The problem with imgur is everyone uses it, and now and then it gets overloaded.

Re: Photobucket is down
yeah a while back I went and downloaded important photos from photobucket back to my hard drive. I guess I should go check it out again. Make sure nothing super important is there.
dang.
well, for free, what do you expect? I"m sure their business model includes some income stream, from somewhere. And, we all know if it's free, very few will volunteer to send a "few bucks per month" to keep it cheap...

Oh, I retrieved copies of all my photos from Photobucket a little while ago. And the newer ones, I still have in this computer.
And this computer has a backup drive built in. Still probably ought to make other backups.
Their business model has been advertising on your screen -- or $12.95 or some such per year without ads. But with all their outages, they are obviously penniless.

Re: Photobucket is down
Yes, I followed your recommendation last time we discussed this. But after I loaded 36 pictures on Picture Trail, I ran up against some sort of limit. And by then, Photobucket was online again.
I also looked into a couple other hosts, all as recommended on that other thread. And I encountered difficulties with each.
Now.... I have given this some thought. When Photobucket goes poof, so do I. Well, not I personally... but those photos in those online pieces. It's not actually important. I bet I spend far too much time on that stuff, for what is accomplished with it. I have not worked on an actual bicycle in weeks -- I only discuss them online. That could safely change.

Re: Photobucket is down
Photobucket sucks... just really weird programming...
What is the best site to use?
Or maybe the ePlaya should increase the size allowance of their attachments...? If a picture I can take with a cell phone is too large, maybe it's time for the ePlaya to step their game up...

Photobucket
A lot of the Internet is suddenly broken.
Photobucket decided to disallow 3rd party image hosting, unless you pay them FOUR HUNDRED dollars a year!!
So, whatever stuff you've got, that you have the ability to edit, that used them to host an image for, needs to be redone.
As for them... my personal recommendation is to post raunchy porn on all your Photobucket accounts until they shut them down one by one.

Re: Photobucket
I noticed that too. It sucks because a lot of posts all over the net that had images from Photobucket will disappear. I doubt PB will ever see people bother paying for their subscription, but I guess they'll save bandwidth as their user base dries up and disappears?
Imgur is still an alternative though. I wish this forum allowed larger images, but I can see how that can add up over time.

Re: Photobucket
Below is a link to a recent similar thread here on eplaya. Perhaps the mods could merge them together. I certainly agree that this Photobucket mess is a problem. Maybe we can reach some kind of concensus on best practice going forward.

Re: Photobucket
I spent several days last week downloading all my pics from Photobucket and moving them over to Imgur. As for my existing links to Photobucket, I'm just going to fix them as I find them cause there's a boatload of them all over the interwebz.

Re: Photobucket
That's a big chore TT. Regarding eplaya links, I haven't tried yet, but I assume because we can't edit our previous posts (after a couple hours or whatever that new time frame is set to) we have no way to relink images, unless I'm missing something? Granted some of this stuff is relatively meaningless fun, but eplaya is also a valuable resource for all things burny, and a lack of reference imagery will certainly diminish it.

Mods can edit anytime, but we'd be damn cranky about doing a ton of them. A few really good ones, perhaps.burner von braun wrote:That's a big chore TT. I checked my old account, all the pictures were from a scifi show I used to watch, and the forums for it are gone, so no great loss.
