Good evening, folks.
This is my first burning man and I’m attending alone. I bought my ticket on a whim without giving it much thought, and like other impulsive decisions in my life, I’m hoping this is a good mix of happiness and hardship.
Looking for a little advice on whether to join a camp, which I imagine is getting tough this late in the game, vs. going it alone and hoping for the best (and maybe a little help from my neighbors).
I’m a young medical professional from central Texas (Where’s the regional representation from Austin?). Pragmatic and laissez faire. Fit, Good with my hands. Mr. Meeseeks mentality, with a Rick Sanchez personality.
I’ll only be on the playa for 3 days and am first and foremost looking for shade and good conversation. Not looking to pay $500 to join a camp, but more than willing to pull my weight and then some.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Or if you know of a camp that’s looking for the above, please let me know.
Laissez le bon temps bruler.

You're going to go to Burning Man and only stay there days?
If a camp provided you what you need, $500 would be a bargain.
Really, you're not a burner or even belong on the playa at all, ever, if you don't show up fully self sufficient.

Regardless of which camp you join, if any, bring everything you need as if you're camping alone -- especially the shade you're seeking.
Otherwise, sell your ticket and come back when you're prepared.

Welcome Vierge,
I've been going to Burning Man for 15 years, and I started packing and shopping 3 months ago. Still, I think you can pull things together in the next few weeks for you to attend. Just pay some serious attention to the details and read the First Timer's Guide and the Survival Guide in my signature below.
Bring cold weather clothes, bring warm weather clothes. Lots of water and food. Dust mask and goggles. Tent, sleeping bag and all the rest of the things on the list. A bike, a flashlight, a pee bottle, etc.
If you really want to make it happen, you can do it.
See you in the dust.

Just come without a camp, unless you see something in the Theme Camps forum that seems weirdly perfect (I doubt it). Three days is not a lot of time at an enormous & fascinating place like the Burn . . . you should spend your time on yourself/keeping yourself alive/participating out & about in the city, not learning the ins & outs of a camp and doing work shifts.
Get a tent with mesh that zips closed in all spots, get some 10" stakes (Coleman's are nice), and buy a personal shade structure big enough to park at least your camp chair under (rebar is good for shade structures; top it with rebar toppers, or tennis balls with a hole stabbed in, or plastic pop bottles). If you can't shade your tent, note that the sun will wake you by 7am and your tent will boil by 8am, so go to bed accordingly if you need a lot of sleep.
If you can somehow get more time off than 3 days, I strongly recommend you do that, because sitting in line to get out on Labor Day or the day before can take 6+ hours (it took me 6 hours in 2012, 2013 and 2016). That doesn't count packing and mercilessly cleaning your campsite before you get in line, and the drive you will have after the line. Packing up and leaving pretty much eats your day.
You might consider coming in on a bus like Burner Express, or the Green Tortoise bus (GT has its own camp, also), and thereby skip the Entrance/Exodus lines. The buses get their own lane and can save you tons of time if you pack light.
Good luck to you . . .

Vierge,
Welcome! I'd say you've got good instincts if your impulsive whims lead you to the playa.
I started coming back in 2010 - showed up with a few friends, the bare necessities, and a smile. We found a little spot of sand to call our own, bonded with the Chainsaw Margarita guys across the street, an the rest is history. We've returned every year since as Street Life (Sesame Street meets hip hop, because why not?). Our camp has plenty of room this time around and as a rule we happily make space for orphans every year (that’s how we’ve met some of our favorite fellow burners).
We're an easygoing, fun camp without a lot of rules, on the smaller side (about 15 people). We'll be throwing afternoon happy hours on Mon, Wed, Fri and otherwise when we're around we just hang, play music, and share drinks and snacks. There are usually a few RVs and some people camping in tents, along with a communal outdoor shower, a shipping container kitchen, and a big shade structure that serves as a living room / chill space. We'll be gettin' schwifty at 930 & Eulogy this year, email us at [email protected] if you're interested. Hope to see you out there!
Cheers - Bronwen
