Best time to leave?
Is it easy to leave right after the man burns on Saturday night or will we still hit traffic ?
Re: Best time to leave?
You're not the only one with the idea of leaving right after the burn, so, yes, there will be traffic. Gate crew suggests waiting until 2 AM after the burn. http://gate.burningman.com/faq-gate.php

We once left around 10:30 or something the next morning and it was clear driving. That was years ago though.

Re: Best time to leave?
Right after the man burns is such a common great idea that it's almost the most common time to leave.
Anything between Saturday night and Monday evening is going to be the heaviest.

If not having exodus traffic is a really big deal for you, baring weather events, best time to leave is Saturday evening before the man burns.
Any time after the burn will be a crapshoot.

You would be surprised at how many folks don't go to that burn but rather hang back at camps partying.FlyingMonkey wrote:

The man burn is my favorite night. Not to watch him burn, but to see all of the MVs and art cars. There's no other time to see them all together and standing still. You can talk to the owners and soak in their beauty.

I left right before the burn my first year because of the 8 hr entry line.
I just couldn't face exodus.

Re: Best time to leave?
We left Tuesday morning, after all the burns. There was one other one leaving as well. Yep, that will be our plan from now on. I remember someone trying to leave Monday night and they came back and told us there was a 6 hour wait to get out.
Although, I seem to recall them closing the gates due to some under age person being missing, so there is that.

Re: Best time to leave?
I volunteer with GP+E and I'm doing an Exodus shift on Monday and leaving Tuesday. Last year I didn't have a volunteer shift on the Monday but I didn't leave until Tuesday because my co-driver had Rangering. And TBH, last year it was a little sad and lonely to watch all of my lovely campmates pack up and drive away, one by one. This year I'll have volunteering to stay busy, and then I'll hang out at the Man Burn and watch the DPW folks burn stuff and shoot flames everywhere. And driving straight out on Tuesday without waiting in line (or going 10 mph the whole way) isn't bad eitherSkuzzy61 wrote:We left Tuesday morning, after all the burns. I think there were still 3 RV's, in the main camp, when we left that morning. It was sad to watch the space around us open up, but worth the wait.

Yeah, I love the atmosphere more than anything. There's a certain magic in seeing the pilgrimage of glowing people and cars massing towards the center of the playa for the big event. I remember my first where there was a huge throbbing sound from the art cars as apocalyptic clouds of dust were rolling in towards the burn.Ratty wrote:The man burn is my favorite night. I'm going to guess he will rise out of the pagoda, then fling his arms in the air like he just don't care.Traveller in Time wrote:Im curious how the arms will rise inside the pagoda

Re: Best time to leave?
I'm with Ratty.
The circle of MVs is kind of my last best chance to find friends I might have missed during the week and to see all of the new MVs.
One stop shop.
After walking the circle, I usually head back into camp to pose as Security during the burn.
