And don't forget those temperature swings can get upwards of 50 degrees sometimes too!

About a third of an inch as of 9pm-a pretty good soaking.
Reports of Hwy 447 closed (washed out) between Empire and Gerlach.

Very determined. I guess if you take 11 spares there’s no problem then.
I'd be willing to bet that many who have taken Junjo road actually found it to be slower than slogging through traffic on the paved roads.
But where’s the adventure in that....

Re: 2017 Playa Conditions
96 degrees in Gerlach. this afternoon- a little warmer than average.
Extended forecast calls for low 90's next weekend.
http://www.gerlachweather.com/wxforecast.php
Humidity is normal @ 10-15% in the afternoons. While dry conditions make it feel a tad cooler, they keeps the fire danger high.
We had an active fire pop up in the Virginia City area (120 mi S of BRC) late this morning. It's at 150 acres and growing right now.

Just back from BRC:
surface is super flat, but very crusty. I'm guessing it turn to dust fast, as people move around. The crust crumbles easily.

Re: 2017 Playa Conditions
FWIW, "experts" say that because of the wet weather, followed by the heat wave, the playa is going to be great -hard and flat and less dusty than usual.
http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Burn ... 881101.php
I don't know... the last time there was a lake into the spring, was 2008. And the playa that year was EXTREMELY soft and dusty.
We'll see who's right, the officials, or the experienced burners.

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.

Video games are giving kids unrealistic expectations on how many swords they can carry.

, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

I'm pretty sure the "experts" are right on some level, like for the wind sailers or rocketry club, but for 70000 strong hoard of the unwashed shuffling their feet for days on end... yeah.
It's gonna be epic dusty.

Yup. Once those "Playa chips" get stepped on, they're dust.

Yes there will be dust, there always is. I'm hoping tha the deep water penetration we had will have smoothed out, flattened and hardened up the big dune spots

Re: 2017 Playa Conditions
An upper level low is moving into the area, resulting in a pretty good chance of rain and thunderstorms tonight and into Wednesday.
After that,
"A strong area of high pressure sets up over the west Friday, lasting
through the weekend. This will bring warming temperatures and dry
conditions to the eastern Sierra and western Nevada. High
temperatures are likely to be in the mid to upper 90s in western
Nevada valleys with 90s in Sierra valleys. Winds will generally be
light through the period with some afternoon breezes.
The ridge begins to weaken around the middle of next week in
response to a trough approaching the northwest coast. This, along
with increasing moisture, may allow for some thunderstorms to return
to the region midweek."

Re: 2017 Playa Conditions
What they don't talk about yet is the wet low at Puerto Vallarta that may toss a tropical system up the Baja peninsula over the next 10 - 12 days, and the remnants of Harvey rapidly reforming in The Gulf and landing in southern Texas on a NW track.
We may get a rare "slingshot" of tropical moisture getting injected early September with two tropical remnant lows pulling a moisture plume up north of usual tracks.
Having some thick plastic bags for emergency footwear might be a good idea.

I've got a box of heavy mil plastic painter's boot covers in the trailer for that very reason... but gallon size ziplocks duct taped just above the ankle work pretty good too.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

No need to, 100 F is body temperature and equals 37 C.
