Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)
Once the decision is made to put up a chain link fence or any other forced deterrent, it will be too late to "suggest" other options. Once it's done next year, it will be permanent. They won't say nobody has died in a fire for 5 years, let's try it again without the fence. You can stick your head in the sand and say we have no voice and you will be right. OR we can use our collective imagination and come up with "other" possibilities that may or may not be presented to the BLM. What do we have to lose by trying?

have all the guards be carrying taser's , they can drop runners quick..........., but I think you would need some kinda shotgun taser. A running target could be tough for some.

The Man and Temple burns are over. The yahoos have ruined something once again. Time to make something else the centerpiece of the event. What would happen if the BMORG staged a Man burn and nobody came? It would be beautiful.

Yeah, they let me out once a year for "good behavior" in lieu of conjugal visits.....Token wrote:TT120 wrote:

I think the needs of PR and political reality will overwhelm any ideals, no matter how pure the intent. I saw it too, the rangers were not adequate.motskyroonmatick wrote:And so the masses will be subject to yet another set of constraints imposed by the action of a statistical extreme minority. I witnessed the act. It impacted me and my campmates.... A continuing impact. It would be nice if the gravity of what we burners do for each other immediately overtook the gravity of this one man's actioned fate.
I won't be at all surprised if the big burns from now on have some kind of perimeter fence. Can't say I blame the decision makers here. One person could end the event. Its not worth the risk and we are in a risk adverse world.

You know what? I could care less if the Man burns. In fact, in the interests of saved resources put the same one up every year. Then have the gathering on Saturday, have all the fire performers, make it the best fireworks show imaginable with big music all synched up, and then it's OVER. If you must have a burn, burn the temple Sunday. Different vibe, so less likely to have a runner. Don't know about any other burns. That's all I have.

That would be some epic culture jamming if the BORG got a 80’ one of those.

Now that would make an excellent art piece, doable too.

In my opinion, there is not much that can be done to prevent a previously un-predefined, determined and deranged individual from doing just about anything.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)
so, this event has been going on for about 20 years, attendance 10,000 - 60,000, 15 bigger burns each year. let's use an average of 20,000 participants, and say half of them view the burns.
20yrs x 20,000 folks x 1/2viewing x 15 burns = approx 3000000 (3 million) folks watching burns, and 1 successful runner. 1/3000000 (0.0003%) is damn little likelihood of a runner happening. a person could buy life insurance based on that
Fencing: This cannot be outside the 'sandmen'. They need to be able to retreat from the burn and a fence outside will trap them. It is almost impossible to re-orient yourself close to a burn to figure which way to run if they have to 'escape' and a few gates isn't going to work.
Prior to the burn, whose responsibility is it to put up the fence? After the burn, who moves it. How many miles of fencing would be needed?
add to back of ticket and purchase agreement "I am not suicidal" Some gun ranges have this.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)
I'm with you on those numbers, EspressoDude, but I'm not sure a no-suicide pledge would help at all.
I was aware this year of a fuck-ton of folks who took "something" and were convinced they could fly. Some were corralled in time and some were scraped off the playa on backboards. Was it stronger shit or bad shit or shit that someone thought should be more potentially fatal? Who knows. But if you ask me why a 41 year old married man with young kids would run into the flames, my guess would be that he thought it would be really great fun.
But we will never know, will we?

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)
While a wife and young kids be an incentive for most of us to continue living, it very well could be the opposite for someone suffering depression or mental illness. In this case it's not necessarily an either depression or drugs situation. Both could have been factors, but yes, we'll never know.MyDearFriend wrote:But if you ask me why a 41 year old married man with young kids would run into the flames, my guess would be that he thought it would be really great fun.
