I am a virgin burner and looking at making the trip for 2018. I'll be coming from ontario Canada and making the trip to and from a work trip. I'm 28 and a single woman travelling in a camper van. I'm not worried about being self reliant or LNT etc but am more concerned about the social aspect. Should I find a camp or do my own thing... What is involved with joining a camp etc? My passion in life revolves around yarn including knitting spinning and weaving. I love being like no one else and surprising people all the time.

The camp or solo debate is fierce on ePlaya. I know Ontario is very large, but do you know there is a regional there: https://regionals.burningman.org/regionals/canada/. That is a good way to meet other creative people and after a few months that could lead to being asked to join a camp. It may also help with getting secondary market tickets and transportation.

Also, I am always looking to add new features to our camp.
For example, I am currently talking with a lady who sews costumes. If she joins us, we might have the beginnings of a "textile arts" department.
Generally... on the "solo or join" question, I am inclined to suggest joining a reputable camp (as opposed to just some people thrown together without purpose and direction).
I like the concept of "apprenticing". Me, I benefited tremendously by being invited into a solid camp of level-headed Burners my first year.
How to attract such an invitation? Participating here on ePlaya earned me mine.

There are several costume camps on the playa that encourage all visitors. They collect costumes year around. They create a great interaction between costume advisors and costume experimenters.
We had our own costume department in a camp of 125-150. It was sited in our maybe 20x40 tent with walls which was the kitchen, community space, for dining, and our costume space. It had accessories and makeup. Clothes racks, shelves for footwear, sewing stuff including a sewing machine, drawer things for makeup and accessories, mirrors and bins for broken things. In a larger camp of veteran burners, there is a large supply of costume material to be contributed!
A camp costume corner is an opportunity for makers, repairers and recrafters to collaborate!!
