Paint Up The Town

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Mon Dec 13, 2004 8:18 am

Correction: the new topic I mentioned has a changed title from "Pimp Somebody's Ride" and instead is called "Paint Up The Town". Here's a link to it:

The trailer I purchased has a big commercial brand name on the side. Any suggestions on how I can fuck with the word "Nash"?

Tape out the "a" to become an "o", and add a big mouth.

OR

Just remove the "n", to reveal the post-burn remains.

Make it say "Hash" if you're so inclined... :)

Or do what _I_ did with my camper: take the name off altogether! Then you have a large white canvas and can decorate it however you like...
(Which I did long before I knew of BM.)

For smooth sided RVs, sign vinyl works GREAT. (Go visit some sign makers in your area, let them know you're looking for scrap/leftover pieces of vinyl for your art project - most of them are happy to oblige.) If you want it to last at all, or ever want to remove it, be sure to get stuff that's rated for automotive use. (The stuff that's used for banners will screw up your paint, and not come off easily.)

Have fun!
G.

if i were an RV person i'd appreciate if someone organized an RV village. pick a cool theme. embrace the RV.

maybe put tusks on all them and go with an elephant's graveyard theme. or park them to read a funny sentance from the sky.

but i'm not an RV person and we don't camp with anyone who is, so i really don't care that much.

-

i would appreciate the man being simpler and the performers in the middle less orchestrated. year after year the celebration on saturday night seems less and less spontaneious (sp?). and yeah, i have a great attitude and make the most of my evening. i have a grand ole time. this is merely my suggestion: organize it just enough to keep people safe. let us dance wildly and unrehearsed, and let the man stand mightily, naked, open for interpretation and glory in whatever light the visitors of the hour decide to shine on him. let him be a canvas and let our smiles and moving bodies be the paint.

-

nix the cafe. or rather, offer no cups. have people bring their own cups to be filled.

i have no desire to spend money on ANYTHING besides ice. not for dope, not for coffee, nothin besides ice. i hate seeing dollar symbols out there. i avoid center camp. i'd go more often if the vending dissappeared.

-

volume limitations. this last year i was bummed when i simply couldn't find a place on the open playa without the wretched thuds of a raver camp. a hum in the distance is one thing, but not being able to escape ANYWHERE without CRASS CRASS CRASS CHI CHI CRASS CRASS CRASS really blew. i love house and techno and DnB and all, but dude. common.

-

i'd happily contribute more money to score a permit with more area to play in.

i hop the fence every year to go exploring. i know i know i know: that's bad. but i don't litter. i'm not doing anything that will hurt anyone. i like being far away and alone for an hour or so.

this last year i got caught, almost. saw the headlights. i didn't think they saw me at first. then they began coming in my direction faster and faster. had to BOOK IT back over the fence. it stunk. made me feel very UNfree. i was mayyybe 30 feet back into BRC before they pulled up to the fence.

-

i'd also happily contribute energy and time to help build a cooler trash fence on the perimeter. that orange plastic stuff is U-G-L-Y ugly.

-
-
-

tell me how i can help make these suggestion materialize and i will.

Seconded. Mine's transported the stuff needed to give all BRC folk a shaded spot of live grass to relax on and will continue to do so with luck. Indexing your bitches to how folk camp when they get there, rather than to the behavior that bothers you, is part of why it looks like you're just complaining rather than being constructive...

So what, space hasn't been a problem at any burn I've been to. If it were there's plenty of playa left. Something tells me, however, your issues with RV's aren't that rational....

AZ: It's good to hear some productive ideas but I'm not sure you have the right info. I sincerely doubt that you could really camp 30 people in the space of 1 RV. I'd say you could probably fit about four 3 person tents in the foot print of my 27' rv. My camp was filled with those tents and most of them were occupied by an individual. So basically in the footprint of my rv you can have 4 tents with guy wires strung all around causing injuries (and not looking too attractive to me, either) with probably only 4 people residing in those tents. My rv can sleep the same amount of people easily plus it has added benefits.

I can understand what you said about living in cubicles, interacting with others, etc. and it simply wasn't an issue for me. We only entered the rv when we needed something. Similar to what our friends were doing with their tents. As a matter of fact we were hardly in our camp at all. If someone wants to be a recluse it doesn't matter what they camp in so I have to dismiss that argument.

I am so with you on the idea of decorating up rv's. I've been thinking of things to do to ours since the last burn. There was a big white box truck across the street from us that I decided to liven up by aiming a moving laser on it. It was a good canvas, I just wished I had another to put on the truck and have it beamed onto my rv. I also seem to remember a picture from a couple years ago of an rv covered in pink fur and made to look like a huge bunny. Now that's what I'm talking about. I want to hide my rv by making it art. I am very open to suggestions on making rv's freaky.

I'm not sure what I'd do to address the concerns of the anti-rv'rs. Tell them not to buy one? Show them where the walk in camping is located? j/k I'm not all that sure there's a huge issue here. If the argument is based on space available then I'd have to put forth that there was lots of space out toward sedna that went vacant this year. To banish one type of camping to the outskirts wouldn't really be fair to whoever was banished, would it?

Your idea of unload it and park it toward the perimeter has merit, but it only seems to apply to tenters and trailers. I think a number of people in our camp did exactly that this year but then again we got the "privilege" of having a bank of jots take up a considerable amount of real estate so some tweaking was necessary.

I enjoy more space and preferred the totally open days.

I know the reasons for enclosing it, but with doing so you force people to be right next to each other without much room if you wanted to displace your village from the crowd.

DJ's and PA's do not always make for good neighbors, sometimes its nice to set up a village away from the crowded happenings.

Yeah safetythird you're right. it is really theorethical mind stroking. We can pack them in like sardines and yes lots of room is taken up by tents only sleeping one person. But you agree there's alot more to be done with the decorating of RV's and that can along with tents too.

And I must say that there has been alot of good ideas posted in the last week and a half of which deserves merit of discussion.

But right now, my time is swept up with the soltice holidays and I will digest what many of you have commented and rebuted on and post that after the 1st of next year.

Happy, Happy Ho Ho everyone!

I like how no one says there sould be no sale of ice even though it is more of a "buisness" than the cafe which always has live music and seems like a very nice camp type thing. don't get me wrong i am not against the ice or the cafe other than the cafe is a rip off.
In reponse to who ever said there sould be a 21 years or older mandate on the festival is an ass why would you take the experience away from thousands of young people ,that sounds like prejudism to me.
I do however have a few ideas of my self.

-Burning Man should give out more art grants, I know they already give out like 2-3 hundred thousand dollers but I feel we need a bigger art to gawkers ratio.

-Bike police would really cut down on huge cop suburbans rolling though crowded streets and stakling the open playa.

-no news cameras this may not be possiable but it would help. even though i did not have any problems with them but heard others that did and after seeing some of these news stories they come up with for the most part does not shine a very good light on the situation.

-perhaps at center camp we could start a regional message board so more people could get together and spread the good word about whats going on in the middle of that crazy playa.

Well that all I got for now. please contact me if you live in upper-mid west and want to get some stuff going down.

At that point, all their stuff can be 'gifted' back to them, thereby neatly demonstrating the no commerce BM communal ethos.
It's a stroke of genius, absolute genius.

Hold it in an even more remote and inhospitable place. Maybe northern Idaho or Montana or even way up in Canada somewhere.
Alaska. Can you imagine tens of thousands of people cruising the Alcan in burnermobiles? It would be completely awesome.

Hell no - we want the cops cruising around in the biggest, most obnoxious vehicles we can possibly convince them to bring, so they're always easy to spot.

FYI there was a Regional Information Center in Center Camp this year - it was the first year for it, but it did a pretty cool thing! We could use volunteers for staffing/building next year, if you're interested.

Are you familiar with the Craters of the Moon National Park? Its a lava flow. If you want Burning Man to be more extreme, it could be moved there. With out med tents! BWAHAHAHA

But I would like to see the stages in the Cafe opened to all if there isn't a show already scheduled.
I would like to see the homeless moved out of the Cafe.
And I would like to see a little urban renewal in the down town area. CC seems to role up the red carpet at night and die.

Also I would ike to see guided bike tours of BRC.
And a bus service to the lake.

Can't they do something about all those bums on street corners who try to wash your Mutant Vehicle's windshield when you're stopped at a traffic signal or performance art piece?

What POSITIVE changes would you suggest?

Post by XS » Thu Feb 17, 2005 10:32 pm

I keep seeing/hearing/reading alot of NO THIS, and NO THAT! suggestions without substantial logic or reasoning.

MANDATORY anything is definitely PLAYA-NAZISM!

I don't care if you camp in a tent or RV. So long as you're a good neighbor and help out or share without obligation.

I don't care if you CHOOSE to be naked or not. That's your choice and we are all beautiful with or with out garments.

I don't care if you choose to wear a freaky costume or not. So long as you have sufficient glow-shit or blinkies to illuminate your dark-wad ass at night so you don't become the victim of an accident.

I don't care if your art car is a golf cart, or a playa barge. So long as it's beautiful and wonderous to behold, safely operated/driven, and doesn't pollute the playa dust - either terrestrial or airborne.

(Please don't feel art cars are playa transportation for one and all. Some can carry passengers. Some cannot. If you do ask for a ride and are declined - please don't piss and moan about it. Do stationary art installations have to have a seat for your lazy ass to sit cause you're tired?)

I don't care if people seek out shade during peak heat in center camp. Every city has its urban blight. Perhaps we could have designated shade zones scattered around the playa to offer some compassion for the weary.

I don't care if they sell coffee at center camp. So long as it's harsh, black, distasteful muck. Without milk, cream, sugar or flavored syrup. KILL STARBUCKS. Bring your own caffeinated beverages and SHARE!

I don't care if they sell ice. Whether it's for keeping food from spoilage, beers drinkable, or reducing swelling on a twisted ankle. WE ALL NEED ICE! The proceeds help the local communities.

What about ICE COUPONS? You contribute some time, task, volunteerism, whatever and earn coupons for ice! That would encourage greater participation for something tangible. (Ratio of contribution to value still to be determined.)

I DO care about some things:

ONE PRICE FOR TICKETS!!! - unless you want to base it on income level like tax brackets. That's not fair either.

CLOSE TICKETS SALES EARLY - NOT THE GATE!
You know the dates kids. Plan ahead. Save your pennies. Lot's of folks won't know till the last minute if they can actually attend.

BURN THE MAN SATURDAY. He's always a helpful landmark all week. We can usually get by without him on Sunday. Plus it's just exciting to feel the energy level build til Saturday night.

SUNDAY IS PICK UP YOUR MOOP DAY!!! Whether you're staying for the Sunday Temple burn or not. PLEASE SPEND TWO HOURS PICKING UP ANYTHING MOOPISH! Whether it's your camp area or not. This is probably the most important, and most overlooked means or participation.

SAFETY IS THIRD ONLY AT THUNDERDOME! Drive to the playa safely. Frolic on the playa safely. Return to home/babylon safely. What's the point of going to BRC and returning in a cast, or worse yet, a casket. You've got lots of stories to tell I'm sure. Live through the burn to tell your stories, precious memories, and charished new friends.

MUCH LOVE TO EACH AND ALL!

XS
Too much is never enough.
