Mark Twain wrote that as a young man he had read a travel book that mentioned that natives in South America could work all day by using the coca plant.

He decided to go to Para at the first opportunity to flood the American market with this wonder drug.

One day he found a $50 bill on the street and immediately booked passage to New Orleans to catch a boat to Para.

On his way he pestered the pilot to teach him about the river.

When he got to New Orleans he was told there was no ships that went to South America from New Orleans.

When the $50 finally ran out he got a job on a river boat and the rest is history.
