Stumbled upon Project Pterodactyl while Youtube surfing and like they say, the rest is history. Hook, line & sinker.
39, Male, Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia (mIRC flashback...lol). My nickname - Kikikukiki, is in a Chinese dialect that coincidentally means self reliance. As for my Pinoy kapatids, it means another thing...lol

Im a Professional Architect (aka Chartered Architect), Project Manager, Medical Planner, Interior Design specialist and probably a sucky Builder. If you need to brainstorm ideas, advice, help and support, let me know/ just ask. This would be my gift and contribution to you all.

Planned for 2018, applying for the low income tickets (due to x4 exchange rate) and work my way up. Hope I made the ticketing cut.
Will be renting a car, stopping by Kmart and driving to BRC. Any advice on driving, refueling (Gas), alternate places to shop for groceries and wild camping is much appreciated.

And btw, can i get butane gas cartridge (shape lika a spray can) in Kmart?

You can get that butane cartridge at an Asian market. 99 ranch or Seafood City etc... 4 for $10. Welcome to eplaya. We don't have many K-Mart stores anymore so look for a WalMart.

Do you guys know anything about camping at random places? Are there any laws in USA that prohibits you to do so? E.g. Only designated areas or camping spots are allowed.

How about creating a campfire? In Australia, during Summer, there are restrictions to prevent bush fire from happening.

Also I saw the O2Cool fan going at less then USD20. Do you know by any chance if they are readily available at WallMart?

Pretty much the same here. A lot of the land is private and even public land may have a fee to camp.

Same here. Also you won't be able to build a campfire on the playa, all fires must be elevated so they don't leave burn scars.

It may be. Personally I wouldn't bother. The playa is so dry that sweat evaporates immediately. Check out threads on Figjams Evaporative Cooler

Butane has 4 carbon atoms, Propane has 3. Butane holds ~ 25% more energy than Propane so same volume of liquified gas ... Butane lasts longer.

Liquids like water boil at a lower temperature as altitude increases. Less air, lower air pressure, boiling happens at lower temperature. Not that it really matters at 4000 ft (1200 m). You can still boil an egg.


That is one way they make non-alcoholic beer - vacuum out the regular beer container heat slightly until the ethanol boils off but before the water does.

But I had to wonder why I could cook with propane but not butane during fall camping. I did a little googling and both propane and butane contain about the same amount of btu (energy), just as you said. However they boil at very different temperatures which means the flow of butane vs propane will be very different depending on the temperature. Practically, I've found that propane stops working at about -10dF. Data from https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/prop ... _1043.html shows that there will not be much difference at daytime playa temperatures but there might be at night. It looks like propane barbecue regulators are set at about 10-15PSIG so I'll assume we need at least 10PSIG to cook more than a cup of soup. At 60dF propane will have a pressure of 93 psig and butane 11.5psig. Both propane and butane pressure will drop as the tank is used and cools off. Either will work during the day but butane is marginal at night and in a cold year will not work at all. At 40dF, 4.4 dC propane will have a pressure of 65 PSIG butane 3.1PSIG butane will give you a candle flame.

Ah, yes, there is a big difference in how they are liquified and stored as well as the plumbing and regulation of the burners. That is true.

In the end, for the OP from Malaysia, best bet is to use what is most available in the US.

We use Propane much more than butane. Simpler to just pick up an Propane version of whatever you need for your US travels locally here in The States.

Will also bring some solid fuel cubes too. Have enough of them to last a lifetime. Got em from my in-law while he was serving as a Ranger - fighting the communist back in the days. Hhmmm maybe i should give them away. Antigue/ Authentic military memorabilia...lol.

Last odd question. Do people whipe down or shower in their birthday suite out in the open (beside their tent)? Will that be totally akward? Have you seen any? What is your take on it?

1. Get a stove here in US. The fuel connection on your butane stove will very likely not match what is used in US. Metric vs SEA and all that.

2. Yes, you can shower, walk, dance naked all day if you like, provided you don’t act lewd which is against the laws.

3. Any water, soap, fluid from or off your body, even a clean rinse, MUST NEVER hit the ground. You must figure out a way to accomplish this. Easiest is to bring a bin, put towel in it, stand in bin, catch all water used in shower in the bin and towel, then air dry the towel over the bin so nothing drips on the ground. Or search on ePlaya for many discussions on this topic.

What Token said.
Regarding the solid fuel tablets, it sounds like Hexamine or Esbit fuel tablets. I don't believe you can take them on an airplane. You might want to look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexamine_fuel_tablet

Much of the USA West is land owned by federal, state and local government and managed for the public good, including camping - some free and some permit-cost.

Many federal lands allow "dispersed camping" free! National forests are an example. The national forests have ranger stations with detailed camping advice. The national parks have staff to provide detailed camping advice.

If you are visiting from Asia and have some time, consider the https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm. States have their own systems. Same separate systems with local - counties and cities. The Western US is a great camping area!

Fire? We have had many very bad forest fires in the Western US. So the various federal, state and local governments will have open fire bans, especially around late Summer Burning Man. "Open fire" would be campfires - on the ground or surrounded by rocks, a metal ring or concrete ring. Unfortunately for visitors, fire bans are announced separately by federal, state and local governments. I have never heard of propane or white gas cooking or grilling bans. But in our area, some dispersed camping requires every vehicle to carry a fire extinguisher, a shovel and 5 gallons of water.

Kiki, Welcome to eplaya. The 2 burner butane stove costs about $20 here in the Asian markets. Don't bring yours from home. I used mine for my first 2 years at Burning Man. Keep in mind when shopping on line that the stores like Walmart don't carry all those products in the store.

I don't know how the car rental, insurance, license works for foreigners. It would be best to start asking questions of the rental companies now. Plan everything as far in advance as possible. You can buy supplies when you get here. Read as much info as you can find. See you in the dust.
