Lag bolts in store

So I’m an idiot and assumed that with how many people are buying longer lag bolts (14+) that I would just be able to find some in the store. I’ve spent the last 2 days looking and can’t find anything that isn’t expensive shipping.

Has anyone found a shop that caries them or makes them anywhere from Sacramento to Reno (or Carson)

It’s totally fine to be an idiot at the last moment like the rest of us, but last night I saw a tight ass older yuppie get on the big box store rep’s ass about inventory and call other stores to find lag screws.

I’ve used 1inch galvi nails for years.

They're not a common size to find at a brick and mortar hardware store.

You might have more luck asking around in your local burner community to see if anyone has spares you could buy. That or buy them online (don't spend $173 for those above though, spend $70 for 14x3/8 ones at the normal FastenerStore or other online shops).

If you are in a pinch and can’t find the lag bolts, regular 12” 3/8 nail spikes are less than a buck at HD and install and extract with a $20 claw hammer.

If you really need 18” or 2’, concrete form stakes drive in great with a 3# mini-sledge but you need the super expensive vise-grips (~$20) to pull them out.

Bonus: that bulging bicep and manly feeling after you pound in all that steel.

Thanks for the tips. We just got rebar but I have to do so much more work to prep it to hold hook and keep peoples toes safe.

We only need 20 or so, a bulk order like 100 is a little out of budget.

Those are 3/4 x 14", 2x the diameter, which is why they're so expensive for 10x. The 3/8 x14" versions are about that price for 50x.

3/4”x14” though...those would be absolutely awesome if you’re intending to use them in a more “stake-like” fashion where they’re being subjected to a lot of bending load. You won’t have to adjust how you do things much if you’ve previously been doing rebar.

I cancelled the order and ordered the 3/8. 3/4 wouldn't fit through my chain links. Or grommets in aluminet. Using ratchet straps to anchor the yurt -- I can just hook one end through the chain link, no knots.

All things relative of course...but most rebar for basic camp stuff isn’t going much over 14” into the ground. When I say used as stakes, I don’t mean with some of the thing out of the ground; I mean used in the same applications most stakes are, where loading is primarily lateral with the ground as opposed to a lot of tensile load. The 3/8” lags are really vulnerable to bending.

Rebar candy canes can be popped up with a crow bar or tire iron.
In a pinch, vice-grip pliers can be used (pun intended) to grab the rebar stake and rotate back and forth to loosen and remove. Do not leave home without vicegrips and gloves if you plan to use rebar stakes. .

While a youngster, I saw a campmate wipe out his foot on a metal tent stake and it wasn't pretty. Required numerous sutures.

I think some are misunderstanding my posts here.

Stakes are generally pounded in a distance from the object being secured (tent or whatever) so most of the load being placed on them is horizontal. And that’s generally how we use rebar on the playa. Just bigger, thicker stakes (that are also much more dangerous).

Lag bolts can sorta be used that way, but really are probably going to be working more within how they’re designed if they can be loaded more in tension, meaning the force would be more vertical. Especially the 3/8” which is bent easily. (Not saying this as a guarantee of what works best on the playa, just how a lag bolt would be happiest.) I’m NOT talking about leaving some of the lag bolts partially above ground or rebar pounded flush.
