Lost Continent of Love

Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick, Tony! I thought I had them all to my self! Lost Continent of Love is a great song of longing and perhaps we should nominate it over on the "If you could put the playa to music thread".

I saw them open for Shriekback somewhere in Northern Cal in the late 80's. I was told then that the reason for the name change on the album cover from Comsat Angels to C__S__ Angels was that the word Comsat was trademarked by the contractors that built it for NASA.

OK, I got one for you... Hunters and Collectors from Australia. You don't get any more tense than "Talking To A Stranger".

SHIT!!! You were at that show too? That was at the I think the California Hall in Berkeley. I was there too. I met Stephen Fellows that day. He is one cool cat.

Hunters and Collectors are cool. Especially that song. But I didn't follow them so much as I did the Comsats and Chameleons, and then there was The Sound also.

And you are right about the name. But I think ComSat is it's own company. Anyway, they were forced to cease and desist use of the name in either case. Lost Continent is a great tune. Pray for Rain too.

Yes, that was the show, Tony. I remember chiming in with that particular concert whenever anybody else told me of the greatest concert of their life. Do you remember when the singer for Shriekback, Barry Andrews, took the stage in that big white frock with his arms spread wide, and then started gyrating with the band? I thought, "oh shit, we are in for something wonderful here". Big Night Music was the album they were promoting, yes?

Who is Stephen Fellows?

The Sound is another great band of that ilk. Some of their tunes would sound almost like normal pop without the creepy and disonant keyboards crawling all over them, but that's what gives The Sound... er... "The Sound"

Stephan is/was the singer for CSAs. I lost all respect for Shriekback that day. Barry was a total dickhead to Stephen up at KUSF while they were interviewing both of them on the air that afternoon. Kept cutting him off and stuff. As if that wasn't enough I also suspected that the soundman (Also Shriekback's employee) purposefully trashed CSAs' sound at the show that night. They were feeding back, the mix was pitiful, etc.

When SB came on and sounded great, I mean incredibly great, I felt like it was a cheap shot, and I walked out.

Wow, that is a faded memory indeed. Maybe that's why Shriekback's next album "Go Bang!" was such a commercial and artistic embarrassment. You know your career is over when you cover K.C.'s Get Down Tonight.

Oh yeah. Del Amitri

Well I heard Joe Perry on the radio the other day and I have to say he still seems pretty cool to me.

I've been listening to the new U2 album myself. Since I bought their first album the first week it was out I don't feel too bad. I was actually listening to Coldplay when I said mersh... that one is a little more difficult for me to swallow. I mean, come on, Apple!!!

U2 has always had a great sound. I just have a problem with the way bono is whining and winging these days. It seems so contrived.

The commercial success of Coldplay has renewed my faith in the human spirit. The fact that so many people are drawn to the subtle beauty of their sound makes me feel less alone in this world. One critic wrote "soft is the new loud". Very few male singers can be vulnerable without whining. Other examples might be Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen and Frank Sinatra. If you and I could sing like that, women would want to take us to their breasts and make us whole again... ya think?

Beethoven's 7th symphony. Netherlands Wind Ensemble; it's their own adaptation. I didn't particularly care for it, I like the Anne-Sophie Mutter version better. The percussion was the best thing about this one.

Here comes a fine Paganini 21st Caprice, done on a guitar. It's a variation, inspired by Beethoven's 7th.

It being ol' Ludwig Van's birthday anniversary tomorrow, I expect I'll be getting my Beethoven fix over the next 24 hours :)

The heater fan. Soothing, uncomplicated, somewhat hypnotic. I had to break the usual ambient silence with it because my hands were so cold they were hurting.

Hey MJFM - you and I seem to agree on music. I have lost loads of respect for Bono in his seemingly hellbent quest to be the ultimate whiner. I think he is dreaming of Nobel glory as well, and frankly, I'm sick of it. Someone sent me their latest offering and it does have a few decent tracks, but I find it difficult to get past outside influences. I will give them props for their performance on SNL as well.

On that note I am listening to Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde

Don't know if this belongs here, but it's about MUSIC and I need to ask a question before this song that's stuck in my head drives me pleasantly nuts...

HP has a photo/camera commercial with a song in it sung by The Kinks. Cool commercial with geeky looking guy putting frames on and off his head.... Something about "pictures of your mama" and "a long time ago"....

WHAT is the name of that song, please???

Roger that, Tony. I wish there were a way that two guys could get together on the web, crack open some cold ones, and play MP3's for eachother live without getting sued. Could we just use e-mail back and forth sometime and make it a party? PM me if you are interested.

Now let's talk about a band that took that same tension and did wonderful art with it. I'm talking about the one and only Simple Minds. Steve Lillywhite's murky production and the band that just kicks you in the gut on Sparkle in the Rain. The singer, whatshisname, opens up powerful and vulnerable. You can't be both if you are whining. So he does it like a master. Like Sinatra. He uses a little trick called TIMING! I suck at this, as you may know from reading my posts. But I sure as fuck know it when I hear it!

Haydn's "Farewell Symphony."

If you don't know the story behind it...
Haydn used to be the court musician for Prince Esterhausie (sp?) and was taken along on a hunting expedition to a castle in Bavaria. The prince extended the hunt and the musicians weren't allowed to bring their families to the castle, so naturally they were getting tense and irritable, but of course they couldn't be rude to His Highness.

So Haydn composed a symphony that would serve as a gentle reminder to the admittedly fair Prince. As each musician finished his part in the symphony, he'd snuff out his candle, gather his music sheet and instrument and walk out. So on and so forth, until there was only one violinist left. And then he snuffed out his candle, gathered his stuff, and walked out.

The prince got the hint, and they were all home the next week :)

Okay...I'm not a Christian by any stretch of the imagination but Peter Van De Graf is playing some exquisite carols right now.

We just heard the Three Tenors do "Adeste Fidelis/O Come All Ye Faithful" and "The Little Drummer Boy" and now we have Kathleen Battle wrapping her throat around a couple Italian carols that I don't know the titles of offhand.

One need not believe to appreciate stirring music, done well.

Mr. Van De Graf, you rock. That's all there is to it :)
