I do costumes for a low-end, tight-budgeted, totally-askew, undervaled and under appreciated parks & rec theatre group.

Actually, I got out of the Oklahoma costumes (the director changed her damn mind so much about who was in the number and what they were doing that she ended up renting them) but right now I'm doing West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Hair, Fiddler on the Roof and Chicago (it's a revue; we're doing 2-3 numbers from each musical). Oh-and of cource we're doing The Sound of Music. We only have one nun (last I heard, anyway, but I wouldn't doubt that's changed) but we must have every kid in the city...

That is so cool! I do everything from my kids' school plays to medium size shoestring budget shows to the Big ones where the costumes come en masse from large rental houses. It is fun, isn't it?

I'm a little frantic tonite, Finnian's opens next week and I'm not ready! But everything always gets done in time somehow....

I'm in Long Beach (about 1/2 hour south of LA). It's Stearns Park Musical Theatre Group; it's probably on par with a kid's school play if not a notch lower.
I'm bitter about it not becuase I don't enjoy what it is I do for tham, it's that the director is totally disorganized (way more than the "average" director, I mean this women drived me batty) and I just can't deal with it anymore.
I wish I could do more stuff like this with people who actually have half a brain cell. I've been told by several people that I should look into Musical Theatre West but I don't really feel I have the skills (yet) for a professional group.
I think there's afew (bad) pics on my website from last years' show--I came in very last minute on that one and most of the stuff was thrown togetehr at the last minute on a budget of about $3...this year is much better in that I actually got to design stuff and I plan having some pics dome at the show; I'm thinking of going back to school to take some classes in costume design and I'm hoping to put these in my portfolio.

I know where LB is, I grew up there (Bixby Knolls) Went to LB Poly High. Now I'm up in Canyon Country, about 45 min N of LA. 1/2 time there, 1/2 time in San Francisco. Like SF much better!!!!

I looked at your pics, stuff looks ok to me, just not great photos.

I'm sorry your director is a twit. I've had some of those, they make the job much worse than it has to be. A lot of the battle is learning to say "NO". and then saying it again 25 times!

How old are you? Is going back to school an option? So much of the stuff down here in So Cal is geared towards movies and TV instead of stage. <sigh>

Oh, well, time to get back to work. I have to still make 6 aprons before I go to bed!

Never underestimate a theatre companies need for *creative*, capable tech skills. It's actors that are a freakin dime a dozen (I oughta know, I am one). It doesn't hurt to give it a shot - the worst thing they can tell you is that you don't have the skills yet... and there's no reason you can't try more than once. And could be that they'd be willing to apprentice you in some way.

Lydia is right! I have never had a theater company ask me for a resume. I am always honest about what work I have done in the past, and once you do one good job for a company they usually call you back. I don't know what it is like in LB, but there is a shortage of costumers in North LA county and in SF/Santa Cruz. Unless your final goal is Broadway, I'm not sure that a degree would be necessary. I don't have one, and I turn down jobs because I don't have time to do all the ones I'm offered.

The main thing is to love what you are doing. I love it because of all the wonderful, creative (and NOT dime-a-dozen) actors, musicians, and tech people I get to meet and interact with. Theater people can be a little disorganized (or even flaky) but I love 'em!

Did you have time to make yourself any costumes for BM this year? I made my SO & myself a pair of matching togas with floral wreaths for our hair. As soon as I get them downloaded, I'll post one.

Yeah, I was referring to the quality of the photos. I've got a few friends that are photographers and want to do some shoots, but it's coordinating everyone's schedules that's a bitch.

How old are you? Is going back to school an option?

I will be celebrating (hopefully in some sort of style) my silver anniversary in january. I've been looking at FIDM but it's just not in the budget. Someone yesterday turned me on to classes at LA Trade Tech. I'm not necessarily in it for a degree (I'm living proof that college degrees will get you nowhere--I already have several that I never use!) but I still have a lot to learn about pattern drafting and stuff and I'd really like to take some classes. School has always been more than just edication, too--sad to say, it's also about networking and making connections.

My final goal is far from Broadway. I'd be more than happy here if I was doing something that interested me. I'm a bit hesititant to go whole hog on this becuase I know myself and I know I have a short attention span and I don't want to get burned out on it after a few years. But the flipside is, too, that I'd rather do it now and get some enjoyment out of it befoer I get burnt out.

I didn't realize there was shortage in north LA or SF (I have been mulling over moving up north).

I did sort of make some costumes for BM this year. I made a fur coat (it's my latest love) and my dance costume for the burning bellies, along with a few other odds and ends, but I don't really have any pics. The fox costume I did for Flambe Lounge got pretty rave reviews; I'll see if I can post it later.

Off to may "day job" now.

Depends on how you're travelling. Only took me five minutes to get there from Fullerton in the airplane. Which wasn't enough time for rural-raised me to get my shit together, and I lined up with the wrong runway to my tremendous embarassment. At least I did get the landing gear down.

I explained to the tower controllers that Long Beach Airport had more runways than my home state, and they forgave me. But not before sending me around to the correct runway.

Hey, it's LA. We're a car based city. You'll notice that we always refer ti distance in terms of time/traffic rather than miles.

And LB airport has more runways than your home state? I knew they expanded recently, so now they have like 4.

Ten. (Each end of what a groundling would think of as a "runway" counts as aircraft can operate in either direction, depending on wind conditions. Plus twelve taxiways that look like runways from a distance, probably thirty-some sub-taxiways, and ten or so "ramps." It's no small-time operation.

Not that it wasn't my fault--we're supposed to be competent at all that stuff; doing it merely once a year isn't a valid excuse. No harm done, though, and the controllers got a good laugh at my expense since I realized what I was doing before I actually did it, and confessed. Turns out it happens there several times daily--probably because the airport looks about the same as viewed from several directions. And everybody in the air is paying LOTS more attention to aircraft traffic than anything else. At least, everybody hopes they are.

that's a toughie isn't it? On the one hand a tesla coil has this burnnerd street cred high danger appeal that's hard to beat.

On the other hand I'm less likely to die while playing with the theramin... so I picked the theramin.

(however it sounds like I might still get the tesla coil for my birthday...)

right on. i'm not certain of the statistics re: freak tesla coil accidents, but it seems to me you're smart enuf not to get fried to a crisp.
