Virgin burner (hopefully) coming 2019

Hey everyone! I'm Ilia, 30 years old from Russia.
I've heard the "brand" Burning Man before, but this autumn I've met friends straight from 2018 event and 5 to 10 minutes into the conversation I knew that I wanted to be part of that! It was just intuitively but when I read the 10 principles I knew for sure that this is the kind of community I wanted to meet for a long time and this is what I valued in the communities I was involved in.
I work in software development industry and love jumping from airplanes and competing in sport skydiving, that's about it for myself.
At this moment it's really difficult to imagine how I can be immediately helpful to the event, but I have 200 days and then 7 of the event itself to figure it out, any hint will be appreciated, but this is just a greeting, not a "I don't know what to do" thread (But I don't obviously)

Ooooh, check out Burning Sky. They're a camp that facilitates on-playa skydiving, they also do a couple of really cool air 'shows'.

(one has to be an experienced skydiver, with ~200 jumps under one's belt to jump on-playa, but I'm guessing you meet that criteria)

Thank you! Yes, I've heard of them, definitely will look into it and visit them on the playa for sure, but I have a bit more of a wide disposition for the event, trying to make fewer concrete expectations and be open and ready for anything, so I'm a bit wary to start with something too familiar, but I will contact them. I have 801 jumps as of now and hoping to make a bunch the coming season

Being a lamplighter is a good volunteer gig if you're not sure what you want to do. It's a daily walk-up opportunity, and doesn't have to be signed up for in advance.

There are some other options in the sidebar--but be careful of what you commit to your first year, in general. You need time to acclimate to the environment, and don't want to spend too much time on one thing when there's a whole city out there to be explored.

Thank you. Nah, you don't have to justify anything, you either want it (anything) and do it despite fear etc or not, if you don't Wind tunnels can show some of why we do want to do it.
Skydivers are mostly very fine crowd though.

I am sure they are a fine crowd. A little crazier than many, but a fine crowd, nevertheless.

The one time I did it, I had a bad experience with a vulture who decided to commit suicide using my body for the attempt. It was not pretty. I know,...what are the odds?

Wow! That's terrible! You mean on a tandem skydive? Under the parachute? Colliding with anything in the air can be deadly

I was lucky and not so lucky. It hit me in the side before chute deployment. I was barely out of the plane. Cracked a few ribs and my clavicle. Luckily, I did not black out or go into shock.

When I hit the ground, I passed out. Luckily the ground crew saw what happened and was right there to meet me as I hit the ground.

the airport is a great place to spend time, sometimes you can volunteer there your first year. i suspect you will find like minded souls there.
