Joel can be a crusty old stickler, but he's right. ON this board theres a sort of "eplayans will help those who help themselves" ethic and we tend to enforce it in a way that can be scarey to newbies.
I'd also recommend looking and seeing if there are any local regional contacts in your area. There's a link on the main page of the burningman website.

What that translates to is: at least do enough research on your own to have a specific question to ask. Otherwise you appear lazy (and not likely to contribute significantly to Black Rock City). When is the next one? Go to; www.burningman.com and look to the upper left of your screen...You will also notice that tickets go on sale January 5th.

Be sure to read the survival guide. Ask lots of specific questions. Read everything you can. Be committed (or get committed, I forget which...)

Oh yeah, I forgot to say; read the 2nd thread of this group "Frequently Asked Questions" - chances are the questions you need answered (wether you know what they are or not) have already been asked and answered already...

How did you get here?

Post by Otisserie » Tue Dec 21, 2004 6:59 pm

I keep wondering how these newbies find eplaya without going through burningman.com in the first place? It doesn't come up on Google if you type "Burning man" anything. It's not a separate domain. And if you hit the BM site, this isn't the first thing you're going to click on.

Is there some direct link to Eplaya somewhere or are all these complete newbie type questions just trolls?

Chel:sea - how did you find this board without going through the BM main site?

I'm perfectly willing to believe that they find the main site and then the bbs. People do process information differently, and some may want to ask questions before reading. Maybe they'll retain the information better when it's gained in an interactive way. (Which is part of why I suggested regional contacts--face to face may be a wonderfull way of learning.) Websites may be a useful adjunct, but there's a whole lot of things I rather learn from a book or an informed source or a friend or a newspaper. Just a thought.

So you're telling me that this girl first went to the Burning Man website which prominently displays the following:

and then says "I think I'll go over to the Eplaya BBS, register, log in, and then ask when Burning Man is".

There's "processing information differently" and then there's "not processing information at all". How the hell would she ever survive the playa?

I still call "troll".

Perhaps, she (presumed gender) simply thought that this was a nice little place to send an email questions and not a contentious bbs. After all, even the fact taht she was forced to register is not a real anomoly when you consider some of the websites out there.

I've done some heavy patrolling of the culture of bulliten boards, but I think that we can extend a little patience to newbies. In some cases this is a breather to find their feet, in others it's enough rope. In some sence we are here at the conveinece and expence of the llc. I think we can afford to be little better ambassadors to the event so that people who decide not to go do so on the basis of good information, not a bunch of crusty old coots going "poof!" over minor things.
