brand new burner

Post by Siobhanie56 » Sat Feb 23, 2019 5:06 pm

Hey ePlaya folks,

It's my hope to join you all at Burning Man this year. Like many, I've been intrigued by Black Rock City for years, but whenever I'd mention my interest to friends, I was often met with words of caution ("you know they sacrifice a person every year!" - my roommate) or dismissal ("that's some white people sh!t" ). So, I let the idea go for a while.

But, upon reading about this years' theme, the history of BRC, and the 10 Principles I realized my life in default world has been moving me in the direction of a more wholehearted, expansive, collaborative lifestyle anyway, however resistant I've been to it. This challenge might just be the next right step. So, I'm making plans to go solo, give what I can and find community along the way.

Here's hoping I see you in the dust. :D

Hey there, welcome to ePlaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Welcome Siob. Burning Man can change your life forever. If you live in an area where there are other burners you can be active all year. Where do you live? Eplaya is a great example. Some folks are on this site every day asking and answering questions. Major cities have camps with monthly meetings, projects and parties. Be as involved as you like.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I live in Florida. Looked through the regional section of BM site, and clicked on links for Orlando area burners as they're closest to me, only to find the links didn't work. I'll keep looking, though.

Ok, I had to giggle a bit at what some of your friends have said.

Welcome to ePlaya, the digital version of BM! Yes, we do sacrifices. :)

Good news on the human sacrifice. With 70,000 people there, chances are it won't be you.

That's some white people sh!t? No one told ME, so I ended up going 14 times . . .

Oops!

Thanks for the welcome, Skuzzy. If it's "eSacrifices" on the ePlaya, then I'm cool with that. *goes to find her spotless lamb*

Likewise! Never feel excluded from Burning Man by virtue of not being white. The reasons for Burning Man being demographically Kinda Pale are truly 1) complicated, 2) socioeconomic and 3) cultural. The racial mix there is more a result of multiple societal issues than the attitudes of the attendees themselves.

I feel quite welcome there, and always have--although seeing minorities (particularly African Americans) is still moderately exotic, and sadly exciting.

Note: I went with a few friends during my first years, but it DID take me 4 Burns to find my "tribe". (I'm a bit reserved; used to be much worse.) If you're looking for a camp, message me with your skills and interests and I may have recommendations.
