I think the mindset was more about voting against the Hillary, rather than for the Trump.

To Trump's credit, he portrayed himself as an ultra rich mogul. Huge buildings had his name on them and that name had value. It was branding and he was good at that. The truth is he didn't own most of those buildings, but he was paid a royalty for the use of his "golden" name. For the ones he did put up, they were leveraged to the gills. Most everything was upside down. He owed substantially more than he had.

To most of the supporters, Trump was the epitome of wealth and business genius. This is the brand building paying off. Whether you like his personality or not, he built this persona and perceived image.

Yes, from a marketing perspective he was brilliant, or had surrounded himself with brilliance. That will only carry you so far. Most marketing is designed to keep you from looking too deep and this is where he fails. Once you get passed the noise,...well.....it ain't pretty.
