My fear of past discretions affecting 2019 experience

Post by Costi91 » Sat Feb 09, 2019 1:48 pm

Hi guys,

This is a virgin burner here, and I recently read the post that Marian Goodell made about the major shift in attitude towards consumerism in the last few years.

I think it is great that the community are voicing their opinions and joining together to prevent hostile and exclusive experiences taking place. Although I have yet to participate in everything that Black Rock has to offer, just reading the part about people being denied opportunities to enjoy themselves because "they weren't pretty enough" made me sick.

Taking into consideration that I planned to travel alone from Australia for this experience, my question to you all is: how does a virgin Burner ensure that I am part of a community that isn't hostile and even more so, as a new comer, how can I avoid being painted with the same brush as some of the other new comers who have brought hostility, transgressions and prejudice over the last few years?

Thanks for your time!

Hostility, transgressions, and prejudice are by far the exception. I have only been twice, but I have mostly encountered very open welcomes. There is so much to see and do that each burner’s experience is unique.

You're not going to encounter a lot of hostility on the playa itself. However, the online Burner community gets bored and fractious in the winter sometimes, and there is a LOT of protectiveness over the event itself, and making sure it doesn't get destroyed by commercialism and the weight of its own popularity.

You can avoid being painted with unfavorable brushes by:

* Reading the Survival Guide several times.
* Reading & observing the 10 principles.
* Using google and the keyword ePlaya when researching answers before asking really easy questions (we really appreciate people who make an attempt to find the answers first.)

* Using only 1-ply toilet paper in the portos, and never leave anything else in them. (Pack any wipes and tampons out in a plastic baggie; a little "biffy bag" for the portos with sanitizer and supplies is an excellent decision). If we clog up the portos with 2-ply and tampons we risk the sanitation contract (a huge no-no) and some poor sanitation worker has to reach into the hose and unclog it.

* SIT on the toilet seat. Hoverers tend to pee on the seat, and people who hover sometimes get yelled at by the next person. The toilets are cleaned twice a day and are pretty nice, but if this still terrifies you, bring one of those travel cans of lysol and pretty things up for yourself. (Needless to say, bathroom etiquette is pretty serious at Burning Man.)

* Lock up your bike! If you don't, it'll get stolen and later abandoned, and then you've MOOPed a large item on the playa.

Basically, if you're as prepared as possible, don't mess up the bathrooms, or leave MOOP, that's a great start.

Once you've got that under control, participate! Don't be a spectator. You'll probably be fine. Many of us are super excited for the virgins, and are happy to meet you. But no one will know just looking at you that you're a virgin, unless your costume is shedding feathers and sequins while you look for the Food Court . . .

Our camp hosted an Aussie virgin a few years ago. That guy out burned our entire camp! He did his homework, came prepared, and throughly embarassed me by being such a badass!

If somebody is throwing you shade tell them to eat shit! Then go find something else to do!

You haven't even arrived and you're already worrying. Put more effort into thinking about what flavour of 2 minute noodles you're going to bring!
Burn Burn yes you're gonna Burn.

for me, the solution is to volunteer. i spend my whole burn hanging out with the people who are there to help others. it rocks. <3

prepare well, take care of your body, and bring your good attitude. you will find your tribe :)

Be respectful of the people and environment around you and don't poop on any ones shoes. Be open to new experiences . Bring a decent bike that isn't falling apart. my attitude is always " How can I assist you " rather that "What can you do for me". Give of your self and be willing to accept a gift from others.

One of my favorite memories of my first burn:
I was sitting around camp with a couple friends and this guy approached us.
"Would you like a cup of espresso" he said , and proceeded to take an espresso maker and 2 cups out of his back pack, brewed the coffee, and handed us the cups. When we were done he cleaned up , put everything away, and wished us a good morning and went on his way.

Last year I brought a gold Jenga suit that I had originally planned to put on a manikin that was part of a small art display I had made. It didn't fit and one day I took it with me as I went out into the city on my bike. I saw a young guy about the right size walking down the street and asked him if he would like it. His face lit up with the possibilities and he went away with the suit and a huge smile on his face.
