We have enjoyed coming by the camp the last three years.

Cryoguy, Why wouldn't they come back? Just because 3 douche sacs think they can vandalize an art exhibit that upsets them? Art is suppose too elicit a feeling from you. Those Barbies, Nazis and ovens have been on display for longer than I've been attending. Those three thought they could drive by on their exodus route and do dust angels in the Barbie pit without getting caught. My only concern is why weren't they arrested? Burning Man is full of objectionable things. Chuckle, frown, yell obscenities and move on down the road. It's Burning Man. Not Disney Land.

The articles indicate that a barbie camp member was charged with assault with a deadly weapon for breaking an tail light? Maybe the articles are leaving out details, but it sounds very unfair for that serious of charge. And it seems at the very least the a-holes perps should have been arrested for vandalism.

I don't know if this is what was intended, but I've always thought of the display as:

• an interesting way to remind those who know of the Holocaust, and
• to get the attention of any who somehow don't.

I could certainly understand someone being particularly upset and disgusted at someone vandalizing and interfering with that.
I once talked with the man who was with the first-in to the camps, as his job was to photograph the camp's documentation as evidence; interesting.

I've always understood that smashing a tail-light can be a quick way to:

• mark a fleeing vehicle so law enforcement can more easily find it,
• LE can collect the broken pieces of the lens so they can be matched to the vehicle to prove identification of the vehicle in court,

and no one gets hurt and it's cheap to fix.

The press loves to sensationalize things.

If all art were allowed to be vandalized because someone did not like it, there would be no art, anywhere. Of course the press will not talk about that as it does not make as good of a headline.

A precedent has been set. People were allowed to vandalize an installation and walk away free and clear. That outrages me to an extent I cannot express, but do not worry as I will not go about vandalizing things. The ignorant won the day.

All I can say about this is that BarbieTM was a character in Todd Haynes early movie Superstar. It's a brilliant but sad art work which tells a true story about a famous musician who starved herself to death at age 32. Todd has gone on to an excellent career in filmmaking.

So I think BDV is art that is a touchstone for many issues to think and talk about.

We hope the case is thrown out of court or reduced to a namby pamby misdemeanor with a nominal fine. But secretly wouldn't it be fun to mount a full-on BarbieTM defense court case?

The crowd has really changed & I question whether I'm going Home anymore or just attending regional events. Burning Man is attracting a lot of people I just don't care to Burn with.

There has been way too much art getting destroyed by complete idiots in the last few years. Is this new or has it been going on for a while? I've only been Burning since 2012 & the event changed considerably since then.

I was only able to read the second article and it didn't have much content. What happened to the people that vandalized the camp?

I guess it's about time I chime in here. Yes, we were vandalized three or four years ago, but that I put to stupidity and nothing else. No real harm done. This year, it began on Tuesday when a woman came in (there were, by the way, six to the attacking party: four from Australia, and one each from NYC and SF) and started yelling at me for being a "white jew-hating supremist" and I should have been killed by the Nazis so "...I could see what it was like..." Never mind that I'm Jewish, she didn't want to hear it. She said "It fucking Trump's fault that you think you assholes can get away with this!" What? I tried to tell her we've been doing it since Bill Clinton was president, but she just swore at me some more and stormed off. Then on Friday one of the perps came by and did the same thing. I only caught the very end of that, but one of our campmates Danielle was shaken when they physically threatened her. But again, they left. Then on Saturday at 1:00 (I have a picture with a timestamp at 1:03 with them and their car--license plate and all--vandalizing BDC) they came back, began throwing the sawhorses, tearing out the crucifixes, and stomping on the Barbies. One of them threw a crucifix at our campmate Alan and it hit him in the face. Had he not been wearing glasses he may well have lost an eye. Then Wildman came out and confronted them. He was then thrown to the ground, injuring his side, and this one dude stepped on his chest while Wildman was down and kept yelling, and I quote, "I'm going to slit your fucking throat!" At this juncture everyone began to worry about our own welfare and Wildman managed to get up, and yes, he did break the tail light. A monumentally bad decision, but that is the truth. He then asked the BRC Rangers to call in the Pershing County sheriffs so he could press charges. They arrived around 1:30 (the BLM police had stopped the attack but didn't let the the perps go). The perps showed the sheriff (her name was Donna) a video showing Wildman defending us, but to them they thought he was the instigator and, after taking him to the med center, unbeknownst to him at the time, they had already planned on arresting Wildman and charging him with two felony counts of attack with a deadly weapon. I can assure each and every one of you that didn't happen. So I drove to Lovelock and around 2 a.m. Sunday morning posted his bail of $3221. We're trying to get the charges dropped but the main people who did the damage and injured our campmates were Aussies and we have no way of pursuing them. If you have any questions or comments that should be answered privately, PM me and I'll try to clear things up. We are optimistic and are doing a fundraiser to help Wildman with his legal/medical bills.

Doc, Thank you for clearing this up. Now the speculation and rumors can crawl back under a rock. I hope this won't influence future BDV. Bring back your art. It's enjoyed by many every year. Maybe additional signs are in order. Put a loud fire alarm on the pit. And motion activated cameras if someone enters the enclosure. And viscous dogs.

Thanks for the info Dr. Pyro. I Have only attended BM since 2017, the whole thing is so cool, and nothing like on the face of the earth. But this happens, self-appointed art/ political police show up and spoil the fun. I just hope this is an "isolated incident ".

I was never notified about this debt.

With computers everything is slowly getting entered into the system. You can receive a notice that your license is revoked because of a forty year old incident. Even if it's on the opposite coast. No one can run away from a recent charge.

They can't. The Cops screwed up. I think they just hit the easy button on this one.

These days it seems that whoever has the video wins even if the start of an incident is not shown.

I guess the lesson learned with this is have a camp panic button that calls in support & record everything.

Generally I hate cameras at Burning Man but this is probably a necessary exception that I'd support.

I was never arrested or detained in NV.

I don't know what the rational was, but I was taken straight to jail in PHX and had to talk the judge into letting me post bail.

There normally is no bail on an extradition, so she set it at $50,000, for a $5000 debt.

I would have had to stay in jail for 90 days just to get moved to NV.

Bailed out and took care of it the same day with complete exoneration.

So the arriving officer didn't pay attention to the BLM. Didn't think they had a reason to not let the perps go?
Needs a good lawyer, med reports, gathering witness statements (and witnesses attending?). He was defending. BLM held the perps; get their notes. A good lawyer should make that be presented and not swept under the rug. Yes? No?

is the message that is broadcast.

It might be replaced by something less overly dramatic like

"5 Burners Tip Parts of Barbie Installation, Throw Parts at Organizers, and Leave After Police Questioning"

I think it will take a lot more effort that than that to "drive Barbie Death Camp out of Burning Man" and there is no evidence the 5 were trying to "drive Barbie Death Camp out of Burning Man."
