My son wants an ATV

Post by JimJ211 » Mon Sep 23, 2019 12:51 am

Well my kid is 7yo and since summer he is asking for ATV cause his friend got it. His birthday is coming so my wife and I decided to buy him a new riding toy. But we're not sure is an ATV ok for this age. What age did you first let your kids ride a vehicle? We're thinking about an electric ATV for the first time and look how it is. I'd be appreciate for any help thanks!

When you pick one out, ask the dealer about a beginning rider course. Adults (and children) are seriously injured or die every week in ATV/UTV accidents....just like automobiles and motorcycles.

The vehicle performance dynamics can be quite challenging to even a experienced driver.

Dunno your state laws, but some are more restrictive than others re> age, parental supervision, not on public lands, etc.... Also check with your insurance company. They may have strong opinions on age vs engine cc.

Where I lived, a small village in Ak, an ATV/snow machine was the primary means of transportation for most people. Most accidents where caused by kids. Going to fast, ATV to large or powerful for the kid to control and unsupervised riders. We finally set an age limit of 12yo up to 8PM.

An electric ATV is pretty useless, even a 50cc engine is to much for kids.

You don’t say where you at. Your state will have opinions on this.

In CA, 14 years old for unsupervised riding with a training certificate. 18 without a cert.

At 7 - a bicycle should be just fine. But that’s just my opinion.

If you have to give in, dirt bike is a better option from a “which vehicle is likely to maim” perspective.

I remember when 3 wheelers (Big Red, pre-dating 4 wheelers) gained major popularity back in the day, those things fucked up nearly everybody that rode them...but yeah, two wheels are a lot easier to control, three wheels was a dangerous configuration.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Nope. Not for a kid that age. Do you want to be a hero? Keep your kid out of the hospital. Take him to the go-cart place every week. (You'll find one.) If the kid next door got a 22 rifle would you buy one for your kid? Only if you live in the sticks. Use your head and your good judgement. Will you buy him a car at 16 and a half when he gets a provisional license?

Jim,
Would your mom buy you one at 7 years old? No way. My mom gave me shit when I bought a Honda XL100. I was 16.

Hell no I wouldn’t buy a 7 year old an ATV!
Most 7 year olds have a bike.
I sure as hell wouldn’t of you aren’t an ATV rider yourself.

Yeah I know. First I wanna check if my som loves riding an ATV then we'll search for local courses to find new friends.

Well, I decided to update my post just FYI. So I've been looking for an electric ATV which my son would like and my wife would allow, and it was not so hard as we expected. After reading dozens of forums and posts I found an interesting blog [commercial link redacted by moderator] that reviews the most popular brands on the market. Soon after we decided to buy a Razor bike with hand brakes that looks like a real ATV. We've got a local park where we gonna take a test drive. Hope it's firm enough to last for ages :) Have a good 1!
