That's about correct. The city of Ithaca, NY, has a display like that, and Earth is a city block or so away from the Sun in the scale they are using (I never walked far enough to get to Pluto).

Black Rock Playa - when it's not hot & dusty...

Getting stuck in the mud is seldom noteworthy. But every once in a while someone gets their vehicle so prodigiously stuck, in a place that is so preposterously far from civilization, in the nastiest and slipperiest mud imaginable, that it draws the attention of people from all over. Such is the case for one Toyota 4Runner that spent Christmas in the middle of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.

“Someone tried to reach me last night from Gerlach side, got stuck there. Not sure if they are out now, but they did not seem keen to continue towards me,”

0330 - it is pretty bad. May need a second team. One jeep is stuck but we can get him out. The Toyota is in bad shape. Need a daisy chain multiple rig with how sloppy this is.”

The worst possible time to get stuck on the lakebed is the beginning of winter when rain is on the way. In that case, it is possible that your vehicle will live on the lakebed for months, slowly sinking. When the summer comes, it will be buried halfway up the doors, and the lake will dry out just in time for the Burning Man setup crew to show up and make your vehicle part of the Orgy Dome.

The beauty of US culture is its volunteerism to help. It is very strong compared to developed countries and BRIC.

But got to say to the original stuck Toyota, carry sand plates/mud plates. The steel ones are best and they are cheap. Carry as many shovels as passengers, mud boots, many gloves, and enough passengers to handle the plates.

The elephant in the room is a substantial rainstorm stranding BRC. So bring a few days extra of water, food and a poop setup. Sure that's planned for the Bx*, right?

I was more referring to the inevitable antics related to mounds of soil that would still be above the surface, random flotsam and jetsom frozen in the ice, thin patches.......seems it'd be an entertaining "Keystone cops" sort of thing.

That's why you need to wait for sunrise. To make sure you're on the ice expanse, not the frozen soil maze. Been there, done that, going cross-country through frozen fields, but not on the playa.

Moto camping is also fun out there. There are Indian Petroglyphs on the hillsides all around as well as abandoned mines and hot springs. Wild Mustangs are out there too.
