That pretty much says it all, Heli. Noble calling indeed.

we'll have to teach you about being aggressive and getting what you want. My employee, Lex, is GREAT at this.
My particular trick is to do the half-joke, half-serious request. "[laugh] so, you're going to give me a deal on these, since you lost them, right?" That way you start out being nice. Then, if they say 'no', you can say, still half and half "really? wow. If I worked here, and someone had to make a special trip all the way back in, I sure would. But maybe that's just me"
go for guilt. oh yeah, baby...

mm, see i got for hard ass bitch. not at first.. but Sensei witnessed this one:
rj and sensei get film developed at Bartell's. They completely FUCKED one roll - colour saturation was shitty, and they were cut off all funky.
RJ: You have the policy that if you don't like your photos, you don't pay for them, right?
Bartell's: Yes, that's right.
RJ: Can you just reprint this roll? As you can see, the colour is off.... and they've been cut off mid -frame.
BD: No, I'm sorry, can you come back tomorrow?
RJ: I'm never in this part of town. You can't do them tonight?
BD: The machine is shut down.
RJ: Alright then, i guess i'll need a full refund... and the prints.
BD: We can't do that. We can't give you the prints.
RJ: [does the math for the imbeciles, proving that to reprint them correctly at their rates she'll pay twice the normal developing fee, all cause they fucked up.] So you're saying that because you misprinted my photos, I have to pay more than twice as much just to get them printed correctly?
BD: um, er...
RJ: I need to see you manager.
[rj then bends manager to her will, while wearing a look that clearly states 'make me happy or i'll stay in your store all night']
success was mine, the bastards.
always threaten to talk to their superiors, when necessary. of course, it's important to remember that it's often not the lowel level people's fault. i always sweet talk the wage slaves, and then slam it to the people in charge.
now every time i go to BD (for cheap developing it's actually decent) i drop some comment about how terrible the west seattle developing was. and then check my photos before i leave the store. i must say, they've come out well since then.

i was having lunch with someone our people did business with. he's definitely tres cool... retiring now at 48, funny as hell, very generous. and quirky.
he tells me that he told his 'boys' to make friends with the receptionists, cause they're the ones who are gonna get you what you want. i told him that so far i wasn't terribly impressed with the people skills of his successors. and that since when i set shit up for them, and it's extra, whether i like them or not is the difference between me chasing down details that they've ignored to make sure they look good or watching them fall flat on their faces while i chuckle.
since then, they've gotten much more friendly toward me. i wonder why.

that was my experience in the food industry. I ALWAYS made nice with all my cooks. As a server, they can make your life hell. I flirted, joked, made actual friends with them. They all loved me. And you can bet that I got my food as fast as possible, and still warm... some of the others weren't so lucky....
it was also good, because that way, I never starved. I could go back into the kitchen after my shift, bat my eyelashes, and ask for broiled shrimp, and voila!

{furiously writing on her clipboard taking notes from the masters}
I can only hope to be as bitchy as you girls when I grow up! I'm getting nothing done today with this housefull of children. Maybe I should just hang it up and start drinking?

Fishy visits the deeps on Tuesdays. Nothing like 24-hour cold french press. . .GuinivereElise wrote:hnmmm, that's odd. Looks like I'm the first one in the bar.

if this doesn't get Fishy in here, I don't know what will...

yes, yes, yes.Simply Joel wrote:if i may add... all the support staff... from the receptionist to the IT guys, to the custodians.... you have to give respect, to get respect from the working folks.CoworkerLurker wrote:I had a boss in Idaho who told me the same thing about receptionists. our courier company is awesome. i had talked to the dispatchers so much by phone i began visiting them and we kind of got to be buddies. i had the most exceptional service imaginable... we all liked each other, and made sure shit got done.
now they're having more issues (don't know why) and i can say 'shawn, i've staked my life on your reliability. don't be letting me down here.' things get taken care of.
i never really get bitchy with them.
i usually end up pretty tight with buidling management, too. just cause i like them. but if i ever do need anything it's not hard to get.
