First, getting rid of the Electoral College will require a constitutional amendment act passed by a 2/3 vote of each of the bodies of the House and the Senate.

Second, after jumping through those hoops, the Abolish The Electoral College Act (ATECA-catchy name, eh?) is submitted to the various state legislatures, which must debate, then vote to ratify the Act. It takes approval of at least 34 states for the Act to change the Constitution

Aye, there's the rub. The states are notoriously slow to ratify constitutional amendments. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), first passed by Congress March 22, 1972 is still in limbo, the state ratification deadline having been extended multiple times to prevent it from dying on the vine.

Given the anathema of Congress to share All Power To The People, doing away with the Electoral College would be a long, tortuous path, and like the ERA, may not be enacted and ratified in our lifetimes. Perhaps a movement to call for a Constitutional Convention and scrap and rewrite the whole thing, may be quicker. But then again, that could result in a civil war. Even Madison and the other founders was fearful of the inherent dangers of what James Madison called “the tyranny of the majority.”
