Happy Earth Day folks!
Egads! Do I have this right, it's been 50 years since the first one? I remember our school class going out on a little nature field trip to celebrate... but mostly I recall that it ended up pouring down rain, we all wound up soaked to the bone waiting for the bus to return for us, and eventually we slogged our sorry looking selves back onto the school bus for the drive back. Some things just sorta stick to the roof of your mind...

Have you ever stayed there? It's on my list of places to check in to.
It's still early, but it's Friday and I need a martini. Can I mix you one up Miss Lucky?

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
The motel should be OK. The epicenter was 56 km (about 25 miles) to the west along the highway. No damage reported, according to usgs.gov . That was a 6.5 modified Mercalli intensity, not a magnitude. The hypocenter was shallow, anyway, at only 1.2 km depth. Sounds like just a readjustment long the Walker lane fault zone.
We get highways buckling here due to heat. The concrete pavemet expasnds (despite the designed expansion joints), the pavement locks at the interface, and occasionally the pavement buckles and cracks. Over in Oklahoma 2 years ago a moorcyclist went over one of the pavement buckles at the legal speed of 75 miles per hour and it launched him and his bike out of control. Killed him.
Travel safely, my friend.

No I’ve never stayed at the Clown. I had a lost weekend in Tonopah a long time ago. I don’t remember much about it but I know I didn’t stay there. I’m not even sure why the hell I was in Tonopah in the first place. I think a friend and I thought it’d be fun to randomly party there...
I have never had a martini, sure why not

I love you, Savannah.
That comic worked for me on multiple levels: first there was the hazard of the oncoming train, and that slope was steep enough that it was probably susceptible to landsliding. If you live in Simi Valley and the landslide creates dust, then you have a huge hazard of mycococcidosis (Valley Fever) occurring concomitant with the landslide. It happened during the landslides that happened with the Northridge earthquake.
Sometimes, you clean up from one landslide and another one happens. Mother Nature doesn't play favorites.

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
There's more to the story, Savannah, and since we all need to hear a good story in these trying times, let me tell you of someone I know in Washington, D.C. I first met Vanessa Bateman when she was with the Tennessee DOT in Knoxville, working for the legendary Dr, Harry Moore. It turned out that she and I are both graduates of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, so we had the common ground to talk a lot at highway geology symposia, etc. She was very attuned to geology, and we both blessed our mutual former advisor, Dr. William Kohland, who taught us the right way to BE a geologist, not just earn the degree. She was good enough to be moved up the TennDOT ladder to their Nashville office. She was good enough to be sought for her expertise on that rockslide, and it's a good example of the system working right. When she got to the site, she heard cracking noises and saw small pieces of debris, and she immediately told every person there to move back and let them reconsider what was going on.
Not more than 30 seconds later, the entire hillside came down. The network TV station from Knoxville was there, got the film footage, and all present credit Vanessa for saving lives that day. They filed a report on air which I'll present to you for your consideration.
Vanessa is now with the US Army Corps of Engineers as a civilian employee, the head of their geotechnical services branch in Washington.

I'm back, I'm alive and OK
I had my abdominal aortic aneurysm corrected this week on Tuesday, in an inpatient surgical procedure that saw me released on Wednesday afternoon. I took my first drive out on Thursday to pick up a prescription, and I got a COVID-19 test administered BEFORE being admitted for surgery which turned out negative. A 4" stent was installed which I'll carry for the rest of my life. i'm glad I got it done. My granddad died from his aneurysm when it ruptured when he was 80. My dad had his aorta sleeved when he turned 70. Dad's 90 now. It just goes to show you that we can correct a lot of the physical problems that we're confronted with IF we're vigilant, get appropriately tested, and act in a timely fashion.
The financial side is covered. I'm fully insured with my pension, and have a manageable copay. Even the pain meds are covered. In my casr, I only need ibuprofen during the day. Can we say the words non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain reliever? I have no desire to get hooked on opiates NOR phonics.
Hospital food has improved. I had s Santa Fe-style quesadilla for dinner on Tuesday, and a couple of tasty pancakes with bacon for breakfast. Both meals were tasty and filling.
Yep, I retired in the right place. I got my cat back from boarding on Thursday, and she's happy to be home. Katy (a.k.a. 'Katy=cat' or 'Kitty-Kate') is my housemate and loves where she's at. When she wants attention, she speaks English, in the form of a contraction. ME'OW means "ME! NOW!" as any cat owner should know.
I love all you crazy fun people. Thank you, fuck you, bye!

So why is it I'm fine to walk or bike all around BRC on a cool 95 F day on the playa, but now on a 95 F 22 % RH day at home, walking to the corner store and back feels like I'm going die...
