Container Camps up in arms about being cut off?
Container Camps up in arms about being cut off?
A few days ago the BM sites exploded with butthurt and outrage. 'Container' camps were sent a letter explaining that they would no longer be placed as there is no more category called 'container camp'. They will get a couple of DGS links and they are welcome to apply as a theme camp or other type. I can see how this evolved but how did it go on this long? Once the event sold out this should have been examined for the fairness of the system. On the other hand...What the hell are they going to do with a container full of burner stuff and no guaranteed placement? If they can't come up with interactivity they were a P&P all along.

The BORG is gradually ratcheting up the interactivity and self reliance requirements.
They seem to be trying to control outside services. Containers are an outside service, even if delivered by the BORG to private camps.
The container camps need to have the containers placed well before gate. So they need to step up their interactivity or turn over their container reservations to other camps.

Arrive prepared as if no one else was going to show up.
People who don’t follow that simple rule are what ruins Burning Man.
I’m all for anything and everything that makes it more difficult for people to swipe their credit card and fly in.
The whole idea was that nothing was provided.
The overpopulation problem is largely because too much has been made available and it’s become too easy to not show up prepared as if no one else was gonna show up.

I'm happy that our little camp has no such complications. I'm also intrigued by the dilemma. This isn't an, 'outside services' issue. It's a placement issue. Just say you have a container through the popular BRC program. Do you own, lease, rent it? It's full of gear somewhere and you counted on this years camp dues to pay the bill. Now, (6 months before the event), you're told it's not an automatic placement. You apply for placement as an interactive theme camp and get denied. Have you already collected dues for your camp? They will still bring your container to the playa but YOU CAN'T CAMP WHERE THEY DROP IT. That was the message in the letter. How do you move all that gear to an open camping spot? How do you empty the container permanently to get out of the ongoing expense? I'm just interested in how this will play out. Six months warning doesn't feel like enough time to exit gracefully.

Well I mean, even when Johnny & the Playa Cruizers was a pretty large camp, we trucked all our own stuff.
Sure it’s easier to hire a container service to do it for you. It’s easier to hire everything out.
It’s easier to fly to Hawaii too.
Do you wanna do Burning Man or do what’s easy? Easy is just fine. It’s fantastic. But it ain’t Burning Man.

COL Kurtz in Apocalypse Now:
"...I remember when I was with Special Forces... seems a thousand centuries ago. We went into a camp to inoculate some children. We left the camp after we had inoculated the children for polio, and this old man came running after us and he was crying. He couldn't see. We went back there, and they (Viet Cong or NVA) had come and hacked off every inoculated arm. There they were in a pile. A pile of little arms...."
The horror....the horror.

Re: Contain Camps up in arms about being cut off?
Container camps are those that subscribe to the BRC storage service. Camps in this program get more or less guaranteed placement, because of the logistical nightmare that would ensue if they didn't have a set location for the container to be delivered to. It is a loophole that used to allow a camp to retain placement for the next year even if they happened to do a subpar job of contributing to the community.
