Total deaths in seven states that have been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic are nearly 50 percent higher than normal for the five weeks from March 8 through April 11, according to new death statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is 9,000 more deaths than were reported as of April 11 in official counts of deaths from the coronavirus.

The new data is partial and most likely undercounts the recent death toll significantly. But it still illustrates how the coronavirus is causing a surge in deaths in the places it has struck, probably killing more people than the reported statistics capture. These increases belie arguments that the virus is only killing people who would have died anyway from other causes. Instead, the virus has brought a pattern of deaths unlike anything seen in recent years.

If you look at the provisional deaths from all causes, death counts in New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Massachusetts, Illinois, Maryland and Colorado have spiked far above their normal levels for the period. In New York City, the home of the biggest outbreak, the number of deaths over this period is more than three times the normal number. (Recent data suggests it could have reached six times higher than normal.)

This jump in deaths significantly above averages is not limited to the U.S.. It's turning up in a number of areas around the world. Researchers are saying the global numbers suggest that the actual Global Covid Deaths could be double or triple the current Global Deaths number. Plus additional deaths due to the Covid-19 crisis but not of the disease, due to people:
- unable to access their usual health care, or
- afraid to access their usual health care so they delay, resulting in an increase in fatal outcomes.

Police say that Guardado ran away and allegedly produced a firearm at some point in the chase, although this is disputed by several sources.
• Store-owner Andrew Heney stated that Guardado "got down on his knees and surrendered with his hands behind his head but was still shot seven times in the back."
• "I turned around and saw two male white officers running up into the body shop where not even less than a second later I heard rapid gunshots, about four to five shots fired never heard them say ‘freeze’. I never once heard them say 'stop.' Nothing like that."
• The deputies reportedly were not wearing body cameras. Lt. Charles Calderaro stated that police "are hoping to find surveillance video from nearby businesses."
• Police reportedly destroyed several cameras at the scene and took possession of the DVR that stored footage filmed by the surveillance cameras. In an interview, Heney stated that the police "illegally got into everything, then they had the place locked down and then they got the warrant."
• Congresswomen Nanette Diaz Barragan and Maxine Waters called upon Xavier Becerra, the Attorney General of California, to conduct a full independent investigation into the shooting.
• Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva spoke out against conducting an independent investigation, stating "that the attorney general's office did not have the resources to investigate every shooting."

A recent study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that the actual number of coronavirus cases and deaths linked to the disease may be widely underreported.

The 57-page paper, authored by researchers at the Sloan School of Management and released publicly last week, claimed that confirmed patients with COVID-19 and fatalities resulting from the viral respiratory infection through June 18 were 11.8 and 1.48 times higher, respectively, than official reports.
