New to Burning Man

[Phoenix Rising]

Hello! My name is Hollie but I like to go by Phoenix or Phoenix Rising for various things. That was the name given to me at camp as a girl scout leader and it fits me perfectly. My 15 year old daughter (who goes by Jewel) is actually the person who found details about Burning Man and asked or better yet, begged to go someday. She explained many things and then I looked things up myself. I have to say, just like her, I can't wait to go and experience this gathering for my first time!
My daughter is extremely artistic and creative and I know that she loves to be involved with things. We look forward to meeting new people and finding a group that interests us to join and help us thru this whole exciting adventure.
She and I aren't just Mom and Daughter but we are also best friends who enjoy Creating memories together. Her Bio Dad passed away when she was 5 but prior to that he made me promise to make sure travels and enjoys life. Can't wait for this part of our fun together to begin!

Burning Man is a wilderness campout. So you need a "Burning Man packing list." That includes all your food, water, shelter, sun protection and preparation for temperatures of 40F to over 100F. Practicing camping near home is a good idea if that is new. It is held in a dust desert where the very fine dust, baby powder-like, smelling like ammonia, and there are dust storms driving the dust into everything.

It is an art festival where people build gigantic sculptures, decorate their camps, and fantastic artistic outfits people sew themselves are popular. In the art school world it is an example of "social practice art" where there is not a barrier between artist and spectator, it is all a giant participatory interaction.

It is remote. Some people take a bus from Reno or San Francisco, but that severely limits how much camp gear you can bring, and some people bring their own personal or rental vehicle. If you rent a vehicle, cleaning off all the dust that gets inside is a chore and can lead to extra charges from the rental agency.

There is much to read on "preparation" on burningman.org. You can get information from your local "Burning Man Regional, to supplement your daughter's research.

It can be stressful and exhausting, but for me it always takes my mind off day to day habits and concerns, shows that anything is possible, and increases my optimism. You and your daughter will have many stories to tell your friends after experiencing the event!
