Benefits and disadvantages of a non-event
Ok, we have had 2 years of non-burns due to COVID and several thousand people who have attended them. I'd like to know what everyone's experience was like compared to a traditional sanctioned Burn and which you prefer. Do the benefits outweigh the disadvantages?
Obviously with a sanctioned Burn we have the advantages of having:
- Porto's
- Safety (MVs & other rules)
- Medical
- Ice sales
- The Org coordination with BLM & the Sheriff
- A semblance of organization
- Rangers
- Awesome effigies & the Temple
What did I leave out?
Given the last 2 years is anyone willing to move forward without all these?
I haven't attend either non-Burn so I don't think I can accurately speak to this. But knowing what I do I'm inclined to support non-Burns over official Burns in the future.

Cultural appropriation? Do I go over to your house during one of your BDSM sessions and slap the Nazi SS officer hat off of your head? - Bob

A few of those “benefits” are directly contrary to the supposed Ten Pronciples, Radical Self Reliance and Decommodification.
You shouldn’t need someone to provide you with portos or sell you ice.
There was a temple.
Rangers? They went to hell in a handbasket years ago.
I’m liking it how it is now, really.
It’s way more in keeping with the original Burning Man, which had none of those “benefits”, which only draw in sparkle ponies who don’t pull their own weight.

But will the lack of BORG and convenience be enough to keep the PNPs away from future Alternative Burns?Captain Goddammit wrote: ↑Mon Sep 06, 2021 6:28 pmA few of those “benefits” are directly contrary to the supposed Ten Pronciples, Radical Self Reliance and Decommodification.

I wonder if the BORG has the rights to name "Free Burn" yet?

The BMORG didn’t keep the plug & plays away.
The BLM probably will though.

Personally, I think it would be cool to have twin cities in sight of one another. But the more popular the Renegade becomes, the more bad behavior will be attracted to it.
Yes, the BLM preventing commerce is a good thing. Commerce is an enabler of the PnP, and the BORG spends something like a million on catering for the event, from memory on the 990. Much of what the BORG does is very similar to what the PnP do, build something fantastic, unbelievable, impractical, and expensive, just for the challenge and to show it can be done. To its credit, it has created a healthy DIY participatory art culture which is unique in the world.
That drone show was an expensive project. Volunteers dropped about $1000 for the Internet connection plus their equipment cost for the livestream.
It appears some volunteers are forming up around Friends of Black Rock High Rock for restoration.

Re: Benefits and disadvantages of a non-event
I've been wondering about the popular response as well. On Instagram everyone seems to prefer the Renegade Burn but since I have many anarchists friends and no sparkle ponies (that I know of) my view could be non-typical. Personally, I think it was about time that The burn returned to the anarchist Zone Trip roots and stopped funding the type of government intrusion and oversight that it's purpose was to prove we don't need to exist as free individuals.FlyingMonkey wrote: ↑Mon Sep 06, 2021 9:59 amOk, we have had 2 years of non-burns due to COVID...Do the benefits outweigh the disadvantages?

Re: Benefits and disadvantages of a non-event
There were too many things missing, for me to justify such a distance (1400 miles) and such an expense (2K+).
The large-scale art is my favorite thing. I just knew it wouldn't be there, and that was enough to keep me away. (Not all my friends went, either.)
Lack of portos & ice didn't help, though they wouldn't have stopped me. I've been during years where I had no ice at all, and the portos were awful. And I was not yet at the stage in my life when I volunteered, although I was equipped to do so and did it in my own way.
Yah . . . just wasn't in the mood.
