Old W350 is loaded and pointing out, hubs are locked in, in case I have to push a broken vehicle out of the way! I don't want to get caught like others did in Paradise. A car broke down in the road and trapped everyone behind. I put out extra water buckets for the critters.

*wanders in*
Seems we've dodge the bullet as far as this fire goes. We got super lucky, and it pretty much stayed in the canyon.
Fire crews and a huge air attack made it so. Sadly lives and homes were lost, human and animal.
Now the smoke is laying in thick. It was so close, we had good air quality, since it was all going straight up, and not coming down for miles...now that's not happening. ugh.
Still a little on edge, since the rugged terrain where what's left of the fire is burning, prevents proper fire lines,
and wind in canyons is real.
It was also nice to have LE come up to my place 3 times, checking the area to make sure everyone knew what was going on, and asking if any of us needed help "getting ready" or "bugging out".
A toast to the first responders, and LE, who came from all over the area.

yeah the winds...
It's going to be a "perfect storm" as far as bad for rebuilding, it seems. Lumber prices are very high, and demand will be high due to rebuilding of the burned buildings. Labor is hard to come by for builders these days, so labor costs are up.
My good friend lost his house in the fire here the other day.
I want to share one thing that surprised me, and devastated my friend:
He had cash and such, in a large safe, which had 2 layers of sheetrock over the steel, and the valuables were in "fireproof" boxes, inside the fire proof safe.......well, it all burned inside anyway. nothing but ash when he got the door open. It seems even though "fire proof" seems it'd mean just that, and may guard for a time against direct flame, it does not hold for the high heats developed inside. Sort of like an oven, I'd guess.
I'm re-thinking "fireproof" now..

Your friend might be able to recover his cash if he sends whatever ashes he has to the Department of the Treasury.

yeah, I suggested he very carefully check the boxes and piles, and if anything is even somewhat intact, there may be a way to preserve it enough to get it to the treasury dept. for a chance of recovery.

My house here in Clearlake would certainly no longer exist without their massive efforts. In the last few years, I have photographed water drops by helicopters right from my back yard more than once.

As for using wood as a building material....
The process appears to be as follows:
We cut down a tree, lop it into manageable pieces, then stack it with air-space between the pieces for a long time so it dries.
Then we decide whether to cut it into long sticks and build a house out of it, or cut it into short sticks and light those pieces on fire for heat, light, and cooking.
In other words, we build houses out of fuel.
When I built my hobby-workshop some years ago, I built it out of steel. It looks like a perfectly normal gambrel barn.

And I know of two homes near me that are all steel, and look just like conventional homes.
Steel will warp from heat, but it will sure not burn.
And concrete will not even warp.
We are successfully using tax-payer-funded incentives to promote electricity over petroleum for several important purposes, and we need to do the same with concrete & steel replacing lumber.
This concludes this weekend's sermon. Those fully vaccinated are invited to stay for tea and cookies.

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
Retired wildland firefighter here who lives on thirty uninsured off-grid acres surrounded by heavy standing and down dead lodgepole timber. I spent 100 consecutive days, just this year, preparing for this fire season. Multiple fires started early this season, one within seven timbered miles of my homestead and the only reason my defenses weren't tested was because we received two inches of rain in an hour and had enough Green and Yellows on scene to capitalize on the extremely good luck.
That being said, others weren't so lucky but I guarantee you that those who lost homes and loved ones didn't do 100 consecutive days of fuels mitigation- in fact I would bet that most suffered from the big city mental disconnect between the pretty trees being made from love and rainbows not fuel that will burn your house down.
If nothing else anyone living I'm the trees needs to understand that you can't stack your firewood next to your house. You can't pile/store anything flammable close to your home/outbuildings, you should have a metal roof. You should dispose of pine duff close to anything you don't want to burn, you should make sure there's no pine needles or leaves on your roof. And for the love of your old family photographs don't put a fucking tree through your deck or eaves. Trees should be three times their height away from anything you don't want turned to ash. The bill for the idiotic belief that all trees should be saved at any cost has come due, don't be one of the idiots picking up that tab.
The next disconnect that should be addressed would be best handled by trapping and relocating wolves (that aren't sweet big dogs) to city parks so those who want them all saved can start paying that bill too.

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
you make some good points, thanks.
Yeah, if individual property owners would make their land and structures "fire safe", a lot of the panic could be avoided. I've done like you, clearing, scraping to mineral soil, metal roof, etc. Yeah, things can still go sideways, but I've tried to give myself, or any hero trying, at least a chance to save the structures. Knowing your terrain and plant types helps, too. Some things don't burn as well, and still provide shade and beauty. Evergreens are explosive in a fire situation. Deciduous, though they can still burn, don't burn as well or as intensely, especially if not given nearby heat and flame from said evergreens.. They will burn for a long time, though.
All this, and my homeowners insurance went up 500 bucks this year, to 7k. ugh. The "Fair Plan" as they call it here in PRC, though does provide coverage, when standard insurance companies won't even write a policy. Mixed blessing I guess?

Good job on your defensible space. You'd be surprised how few actually do this. I wouldn't count on the deciduous trees though, it used to be that you could but with such low humidity on recent fires they've seen fire run through willows and aspen stands- Which you used to be able to anchor line to.ygmir wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 7:26 amyou make some good points, thanks.

fair on the deciduous, though even dry (as long as not dead and brown), they don't burn well on their own. they'll dry and ignite as a flame from comes to them, but if it's just them, and there is a few trees deep, the fire does not travel well, as with each tree the temperature drops. But yeah, anything will burn in the right conditions. A key is getting the trees, and larger flammables spaced far enough apart to discourage fire jumping between the branches. If you can keep the fire in the ground things go better.Montanarchist wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 12:21 pmGood job on your defensible space. You'd be surprised how few actually do this. yeah, humans... ugh, so many think they are "special", and transfer that to pets and kids....I had a neighbor some years ago try that attitude with their dog. I said "I love pets, and your pet is yours and wonderful, But, if it indeed comes here and does (what were were discussing as "not ok"), I'll just leave it on your porch, dead, and you decide what to do with it. You choose the course.

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
spending weekends working up at the Hof, the weather seems to be turning to fall for sure.
The lake is as low as I've ever seen it, except for the twice I've seen them drain it.
I've been milling cedar flooring, I'm hoping to get it put in before the weather sets in...
had a visitor on the game cam.
it's tough to want to come home, when a person wakes up to this view though.

I like the recent cartoon FIG, another good one! Might have to 'borrow' it!
Yep, yg, you have quite a view up there for sure! The evenings are turning decidedly cooler here too; definitely a sense that fall weather is around the corner. Days are still warm here though.
...and Yay! for four-legged visitors!
I had the impression that the Hof floor was flat stonework at one point. Is the cedar for flooring upper areas, or perhaps I'm mistaken altogether? It is certainly looking great!
I'm still sorting out thoughts regarding the burn, and what it is that I value most about my experiences in the desert. I see pros and cons to both versions, BMorg vs. Renegade. I love the overwhelming spectacle of the organized burn, and the experience and opportunities to participate and build that it affords. On the other hand, the renegade brings in a hardier bunch of self-reliant people in general I would think, and I've always appreciated and respected that challenge. Not that my input has any particular bearing on others, but more just a personal mental exercise of distilling my thoughts about BRC going forward.

HI BVB!
yeah, the floor was random granite, installed by a whole crew of eplayans some years ago at one of the Hof parties.
A couple of friends and I removed it all and did some excavation, treated the compacted soil with borax and boric acid granules, and laid all heart redwood 2x6's for joists. I'll install cedar I've milled for plank flooring.
I agree with you, re: "TTITD vs renegade", I'm quite ambivalent about it, and intertwined with pandemic and politics, society in general.
This is going to take some thought!
Glad to hear your fall is on the way. Ours is too, as I've seen several flocks of Sandhill cranes go over in the las week, so gees and swans are probably close behind, all heading south for winter.

Cedar sounds nice but that's a lot of work. Did you have settling issues with the stone floor?

yeah it was never "stable", as far as pieces moved at times, and were a trip hazard even at times. I sort of knew that might happen, but thought the compacted road base type underlayment would hold. Well, it did for a time.Montanarchist wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 8:33 amygmir wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 6:44 amHI BVB!

I've sold random granite slabs for just such applications, and they only hold if on a concrete slab. any other underlayment fails at some point, even if people use concrete grout. Not necessarily right away, but eventually.
The cedar is laying in nicely, but very labor intensive. Got it all down and tacked in place this weekend, hoping to go back up soon to screw it down permanent. Then it'll sit till spring, and stabilize, at which time I'll then sand it and apply finish coats. I mixed borax and boric acid into the soil below.

I just saw an ad for Baileys that involved a martini glass with a chocolate/Graham’d rim. It also had a toasted marshmallow suspended on a pick layer over the top. I’ll have one of those please
Oh my god, it's HUGE!
