New here from the UK!

Post by Mikec1989uk » Mon Aug 23, 2021 1:52 am

Hi guys!
Hope everyone is doing good today!

Burning man has always been a dream, a huge dream to me!

I'm completely new to the whole process of burning man and since a few things have happened during the last 2 years. Now is the time I need to start preparing and getting involved in the community of burning man and hopefully attend the 2022 city!

Can somebody please point me in the direction of next steps and how I go about attending? I'm 32 from the UK, somebody please make my dream a reality!

Thanks :D

Hi Mike and welcome to the dusty world of Burning Man. The easiest way to connect yourself in is to join up with your local regional group. https://regionals.burningman.org/ You'll meet people and make some good contacts. I'm sure there are many local events happening in the UK related to Burning Man. If you truly want to attend Burning Man, you can make it happen. Many people sort of want to go and see it, but not strongly enough to pull all the pieces together. Many people find it life altering, and make some lifelong friends in the process.
You've come this far, now you can start reading up on some of the links in my signature below. Prepping for this is quite a bit of work, but you have a year to do it.
Looking forward to seeing you in the dust in 12 short months.
Sham....

Hola and hello…

Try and find your local or regional burner groups, making connections there can be priceless.

Read all the things here (you can skip the political posts :) ) there’s a survival guide that is very helpful as well.

I think one of the most important things to remember when researching about the event is radical self reliance. So if you have a question, google it here first and if you don’t find an answer, ask here. If the question is easily googled such as; is there ice for sale at the event?, you’ll probably get snarked at.

I’m sure there will be others chiming in here to help you out as well. It’s good to prep early :coffee:
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Thanks for the replys, I have been researching now for a few weeks and it's very difficult for as I dont have any social media like facebook etc.

I have joined a few groups like London decompression, and also microburn, but unfortunately microburn is completely sold out for September

This question has probably been asked thousands of times on this forum and I appreciate the responses guys!

I am a plant operator by trade and run a small groundworks buisness so driving big machinery like diggers and dump trucks is my trade but I'm willing to put my hard work into anything to help out to be a part of the burning man community and eventually touch down in the city!

Thanks again!

It might be easier to make those contacts if you make a social media profile (Reddit,fb). But yeah sic media is not everybody’s cup of tea. My daughter only activates her FB page when she’s going to go to the burn for that year.

It’s good you joined those groups, try to be as active as you can when they’re doing something (volunteer) :coffee:

Eplaya is quiet right now but it’ll get better :coffee:

Welcome!

The people you meet through your regional have many answers because they have done the logistics.

The event is a wilderness campout with sun, dust, and temps of about 7-40C. So as you get further along you might find a packing list useful. It could be divided into things to bring on the plane from the UK, and things to buy in the states, with a plan for disposing of them, rather than flying them back.

If you schedule permits and you have access to a vehicle here, it is easy to spend a week to a month traveling around the Western US camping and seeing the sights, pre- or post- the burn.

ePlaya is pretty well organized, but if you want to search it: site:eplaya.burningman.org your-search-terms works well in Google.

Welcome, Mike! ePlaya is one of your best resources as you learn more. Lots of great comments in this thread :)

I'm going to add another I didn't see. Money. You need to make sure you have a lot of money put aside for tickets, travel, purchases, unexpected things. The worst thing you can run into is an empty pocket. Once you get to the city, that issue falls away, but getting there is a cost!

Think of it like a very expensive vacation.

Other than that, I would encourage you patience and persistence. It's a slow learning curve for everyone, and most are not flying halfway around the world to get to the playa! Keep asking questions, talking to people, taking notes. You'll find some people will answer your question and move along, but you will arrive to people who have camps that need people, if you keep looking. Once you get that far, other good things will fall into place. And there are many options.

Just keep posting here. Good folks abound :)

Hey there, welcome to ePlaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me
