Fuck the Metaverse
"The metaverse signals a move beyond traditional advertising toward creating brand experiences that are more engaging and exciting and less invasive than what we experience with digital advertising today." - Ad Age
In user experience development people talk about dark patterns. Those are design elements which exploit addictive experiences that have nothing to do with the user objective.
(BTW: Larry's Immediacy speaks to honest patterns of experience design, though we make fun of him as having sold his soul to the devil in 1996)
Well here is the new dark pattern: Mark's vision. It is all very Faustian.

On the positive side, this will spur a new cycle of dystopian cyberpunk novels and movies! We already have some odd movies like Free Guy and other living inside the game movies.

Re: Fuck the Metaverse
^^ I'm looking forward to more of your digital art on the topic!
I would love to see a Faust scene with MZ's face as Mephistopheles.
Corporations will work metaverse technology into their employee work life. Then there will need to be meta firewalls to keep ad and VR malware out. Xi, in contrast, is intent on not going down the Internet pathways of the US, the "good" or the "bad" pathways. Actually I think he is requiring large commerce and entertainment websites to turn over their algorithms for state examination. Those would be the algorithms discussed by whistleblower Frances Haugen in the case of FB. Actually Haugen deserves her own graphic novel too.

If this pic was posted on Meta (formerly Facebook), the photo would be removed and you would have a 30 day ban. But it's not Facebook, so carry on.

Re: Fuck the Metaverse
"Zuckerberg’s virtual world of play pretend is a way of escaping the destruction he’s wrought on the real one. Facebook has played a major role in fomenting ethnic cleansing in Myanmar, drumming up lynch mobs in India and Sri Lanka, amplifying white nationalism in the US and providing the anti-vaccine movement with a massive megaphone during a global pandemic. Rather than address this ruination, Zuckerberg wants us to all turn our attention to a land of make-believe where he’s friends with rappers and you can watch Instagram stories on a pirate ship."

In the television series Star Trek; The Next Generation, a fictional character in the "holodeck" becomes sentient and takes control of the Enterprise-D, demanding to be released from the confines of the holodeck.
Recognizing the character's claim of sentience and the related right to life and happiness, Captain Picard and the crew devise a way for the character to live out a normal life inside a computer memory cube.

True to STNG form, the episode delves into the fundamentals of existence, going back at least to Rene Descartes.
Somehow... I do not expect the Zuck to do much in that realm.

Hell, I said Fuck Facebook years ago. Never even missed it.
Go figure. Actually calling & meeting friends is a good replacement for all this virtual stuff.

Cultural appropriation? Do I go over to your house during one of your BDSM sessions and slap the Nazi SS officer hat off of your head? - Bob

I must say, I just have fun on FB, and it's a nice way to stay in touch with people far far away. I don't hear well on the phone, and texting is sorta awkward, so yeah, I use it.
