The mayor who suggested that allowing ice fishing shanties on a lake could lead to prostitution resigned Monday after days of being mocked and drawing national attention to the city.

Hudson Mayor Craig Shubert said in his resignation letter that his comments at a City Council meeting had been misinterpreted.

Shubert later said his comment about ice shanties and prostitution stemmed from his experience as a television news reporter covering law enforcement agencies that have arrested people for prostitution in shanties. He said he was concerned about the potential for unintended consequences.

In his resignation letter, Shubert said he felt he had completed his work as mayor and that he was nearing retirement.

Last fall, the mayor demanded the resignations of the city’s entire school board because he baselessly claimed a book used in a high school creative writing class included child pornography.

After the mayor’s claims, school board members and Hudson High School teachers received violent threats, according to County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh’s office. Bevan Walsh said the writing prompts did not amount to child pornography. She also determined that Shubert should not be charged after her office led a probe into whether he could face criminal penalties for disrupting a public meeting and inciting panic over the threats to public officials that followed.

As officers were taking the man into custody, one looked back and saw a gun pointing from a rear window. A witness observed the man tell the four-year-old, who was in the backseat with a three-year-old sibling, to shoot. An officer was able to swipe at the gun as it was fired, directing the bullet away, and yelled “kid” to other officers after seeing how young the shooter was.

Like, no mention of if the four year-old prefers a revolver or an automatic (steel or polymer?), 45 over 9 mm or the more modest 380 or even if the four year-old still hasn't moved up from 22, let alone brand, model of handgun nor their preferred load, latest grouping and which trigger mod he runs, and if he got for his birthday or it was handed down from his grandpappy. Although the officer did have time to swat the gun away, so that pretty much says he wasn't running a red dot; cruel to make a kid use iron sights when there's a faster sight-target acquisition option available. Poor kid likely getting teased for being the only four year-old on his block that hasn't got a red dot yet.
