He proposed and spearheaded the Sotheby's Boundless Space… The Possibilities of Burning Man auction of burner art. It was not that economically successful. The art making machinery is very complex. It favors art school career arcs in NY, London, LA, and Beijing.
Very occasionally the art machine reaches out for outsider art. That happened in the 80s and 90s when Southern collectors became angry at NY Galleries over price inflation occasioned by the Wall Street boom. They brought the art of Southern visionary artists such as Howard Finster into the gallery system. The publication Raw Vision is a continuing history in images of that movement.
It also happened with Larry Rinder's 2002 Whitney Biennial. That one really irritated the NY gallery industry. Many of the artists were selected by Rinder traveling across the US and just asking artists what was up.
The Sotheby's auction, and the Smithsonian Museum No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man, traveling, were attempts to bring Burner art into the art world as a movement or genre.
While the Sotheby's auction was not wildly successful sales-wise, it had this impact: collectors in the UK are bringing many large outdoor sculptures there.
There will be a 7 month exhibition Radical Horizons: The Art of Burning Man.
"Within it will be eight existing sculptures and with four more to be built on site. Three of these will be created with help from visitors and community groups as is desert tradition."
"There will be a number of exciting volunteer opportunities for people to be involved with the exhibition coming soon."*
The exhibition is being coordinated by the Burning Man Org director of creative initiatives Kim Cook. The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, who own the 1000 acre parkland estate, said there was a tradition of using it as a backdrop for contemporary works.
