Human Powered Fire Breathing Dragon Trike
Human Powered Fire Breathing Dragon Trike
Dear Burners,
I'm considering bringing my Dragon Trike to Burning Man. As a electric assist trike I don't think I need DMV approval, but it does breath fire so I probably need approval.
Do you think it could be approved given the height that the fire is produced?
I haven't measured but I'd guess the mouth and flame are about 7 to 8 feet from the ground. Is that acceptable?
Thanks

You should check with Fire Safety.
My (limited) understanding is that your flame needs to be ten feet off the playa.
I lived with a flame dragon MV; they had to get special dispensation from safety and we had to make a performance art perimeter to shoot flame.
Your trike is beautiful!

Thanks for the input! I can raise the head to 10' if necessary. I emailed [email protected] over a month ago and haven't heard back. Is there a better contact email? Maybe I run it through the DMV application process?

Personally, I wouldn't try for any approval. Operate it in a safe manner and enjoy yourself. People have all sorts of flame effects out there without any "approval", and pedal powered means no dmv...
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Sure, it's all fun and games until you get stopped and asked for your FAST permit.
If you don't have one, they impound your vehicle.
It isn't a difficult process and gives one the peace of mind of knowing that they're operating their flame safely.

Some of those flames effects on the playa are crazy. I've been 20' to 40' away from the flame, yet felt pain on my face from the heat from a burst. And those were all above 10'. And no sunburn. Well, it felt like a sunburn for hours afterwards. They can radiate out a lot of heat.

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.

Video games are giving kids unrealistic expectations on how many swords they can carry.

, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

You may have seen this already Atacomite, but here's some flame effects info from the Burning Man website. Note additional info on related topics at the bottom of the page. Some of this doesn't apply directly to your trike I suppose, but still useful to know.

I hope you bring your dragon to the playa!

Hey there!
Please swing by the Artery so we can take a look at it and if it's good FAST will issue a laminate. Your vehicle is large enough that it starts to get in a grey area and you wouldnt want a visit from the rangers or BLM asking about a unlicensed flame effect. Like mentioned already, please plan to extend the effect end so its 10' above participants.

Hey Mattguyver!
The neck has been extended. The mouth is a bit over 10' from the ground. I did register it with the DMV just to be safe(and thinking it could help getting tickets for my camp next year...).
Thanks for the advice.
