"President Trump asked me to rescind the 2020 elections, immediately remove Joe Biden from the White House, immediately put President Trump back in the White House, and hold a new special election for the presidency," Brooks said in a statement responding to Trump's withdrawal of his endorsement of Brooks' US Senate campaign.

I think the heavy losses among Russian battalion, regiment, and brigade commanders might be an even bigger issue than the losses of generals. It is really difficult to replace these losses, which sometimes includes the staff.

Russians artillery has repeatedly used "two in a row" shelling sessions, hitting the damaged area again once emergency services - or even journalists - arrive to the location. Why Russia wants to invade Ukraine, a thread.
it's because of water. (It's always water isn't it?). This is the North Crimean Canal, dammed up since the Russian invasion of Crimea. Crimea is rapidly running out of water, and Russia needs this canal flowing again.

As Russia sends tanks and soldiers to take over Ukraine, it is also dispatching censors and regulators to strangle the Internet. @AndreiSoldatov & @irinaborogan argue this is the culmination of a decades-long trend to throttle the free and open flow of information in Russia.

We analyzed dozens of battlefield radio transmissions between Russian forces in Ukraine during the initial invasion of Makariv, a town outside Kyiv. They reveal an army struggling with logistical problems and communication failures:
https://www.nytimes.com/video/world/eur ... kariv.html
The following notorious CCTV footage shows a Russian BMP-2 vehicle rolling into view in Makariv and firing several rounds into a civilian sedan — without any apparent warning or provocation. The elderly couple inside was killed instantly.
https://twitter.com/trbrtc/status/1506750942569455619https://twitter.com/trbrtc/status/1506743138454577153In another transmission, we hear the repeated order to cover the entire residential neighbourhood with artillery after the “property” (хозяйство) has been removed — a likely codeword for Russian personnel or equipment. This could be a war crime.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has VANISHED with "heart problems" as the Kremlin's war effort in Ukraine stalls. He hasn’t been seen in public for 12 days and only old footage or pictures of him have been shown on TV.

One of Putin’s favorite insiders has been accused of plundering Russian assets instead of focusing on his day job. Sadly for the Kremlin, he’s supposed to be running the war.
With the Russian military stagnating in its invasion of Ukraine and suffering significant losses of men and armaments, many are wondering what happened to the huge sums of money designated by the Kremlin to create a well-trained and well-equipped army. Former Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev provided one answer on Twitter: “The Kremlin spent the last 20 years trying to modernize its military. Much of that budget was stolen and spent on mega-yachts in Cyprus.”
The man responsible for the invasion, Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu, who had no prior military service before he assumed his defense post in 2012, bears much of the blame for this alleged thievery and the military’s consequent failings in Ukraine.

This is such a transparent reach for base votes that will score an interview on right-wing media that immediately after Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) spoke about Critical Race Theory, Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) said "I think we should recognize that the jackassery we often see around here is partly because of people mugging for short-term camera opportunities." Sasse’s point was borne out when a camera then apparently caught Cruz checking Twitter for his own name.

Some days ago, Russian TV showed the port of Berdyansk after Russians took it over and made it a 'successful' demilitarization: unloading Russian military vehicles in the background...
* at 2:18, two or more large objects fall into the water around one & 1/4 ship lengths in front of the near ship.
* at 2:28, the engulfed ship has yet another explosion, with objects seen hurled upwards, and there follows three large objects splashing into the water off the starboard side of the near ship, which is still showing smoke on the fire-deck.
* at 2:41, something splashes into the water to port just off the bow of the near ship, with smoke from its fore-deck increasing after that.
* at 2:50 there are a number of objects splashing into the water between the engulfed ship and the near ship, with a rather substantial chunk at 2:54 splashing to starboard of the near ship. Following that, the far ship picks up steam, needing to clear the breakwater before turning to open water, with both trying to clear the area of debris bombardment from the engulfed ship.
* at 5:16, with the two ships having turned port to open water, a third ship emerges from the smoke, trying to leave. There's still debris from the engulfed ship's ongoing explosions splashing into the water, with the emerging ship well within their range.
* around 6:00, we see that the far ship isn't making much headway, and the near ship seems to be slowing in case it needs to help the third ship, with the engulfed ship still having explosions and debris hitting the water at 6:06. Shortly after that, with debris still flying, a large chunk splashes around half way out along the breakwater.
* The far ship continues along, without a full turn to port, which would have taken it out of the smoke plume of the engulfed ship. Begs the question can it turn? If so, why didn't it move to get out of the smoke?
* Through this, there's a second fire to the left behind the engulfed ship, but I can't tell if that's another ship or something on the dock, but it's sure been kicking out black smoke.
* Ten minutes into the clip, there's still explosions and flying debris.
It would be interesting to know how much of the damage incurred by those three ships is from the initial strike, vs. from the secondary explosions of the engulfed ship. Obviously a lot of metal coming down on them.
Updated: At 07:45 in the port of Berdyansk, during unloading, Tochka-U tactical missile hit at the Russian landing ships "Saratov", "Caesar Kunikov", "Novocherkassk". "Saratov" is completely destroyed. "Kunikov" and "Novocherkassk" were damaged and arrived at sea..
https://twitter.com/DylanMalyasov/statu ... 8775228416
The full video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g5ZVwDqLRg shows a lot more detail. Two ships are seen escaping the ship engulfed at the dock. One is pulling out with an active fire midship. The other shows varying smoke on its fore-deck. Zooms in around 2:10Time-lapse video showing the events at the port of Berdyansk this morning. Two LSTs left the port, one of them was on fire.

More sanctionsRussia’s stock market rallies in first day of trading since Ukraine war
US calls move a ‘Potemkin opening’ with only limited shares available and no foreigners allowed to sell
Just 33 of the 50 securities on the rouble-denominated Moex were trading, while the RTS index of Russian companies quoted in US dollars remained shut.
“After keeping its markets closed for nearly a month, Russia announced it will only allow 15% of listed shares to trade, foreigners are prohibited from selling their shares, and short selling in general has been banned. Meanwhile, Russia has made clear they are going to pour government resources into artificially propping up the shares of companies that are trading,” he said.
“This is not a real market and not a sustainable model – which only underscores Russia’s isolation from the global financial system.”

12 Rosgvardia officers from Krasnodar refused order to go to Ukraine and were fired, human rights lawyer Pavel Chikov says. The officers said the order was illegal as their official duties were limited to Russian territory. They are suing their station for wrongful termination.
"None of [them were} informed about a business trip to the territory of Ukraine to participate in a special military operation nor about the tasks and conditions of this operation, and as a result, did not give consent to it.”
They were initially sent to Crimea for an exercise Zaslon-2022. The officers were returned to Krasnodar, subjected to an official probe and dismissed from service.

[for example, from 2017, from NewYorkTimes...]If the missile took 37 minutes to fly 578 miles, that would mean that it had a highly lofted trajectory, probably reaching an altitude of more than 1,700 miles, said David Wright, co-director of the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Such a missile would have a maximum range of roughly 4,160 miles, or 6,700 kilometers, on a standard trajectory, he said. North Korea said the missile flew for 39 minutes.
“That range would not be enough to reach the lower 48 states or the large islands of Hawaii, but would allow it to reach all of Alaska,” Mr. Wright wrote in a blog post.

Lviv, Ukraine (CNN) — The first warm, sunny days of spring in the southern Mykolaiv region are ushering in a grim new reality: the smell of the dead.
As the frost melts and ground thaws, the bodies of Russian soldiers strewn across the landscape are becoming a problem.
* Kim said that the Russians had retreated and left their colleagues' charred bodies behind on the battlefield. He sent CNN pictures of the abandoned corpses, adding: "There are hundreds of them, all over the region."
* images of Russian ambulance convoys appearing to arrive at field hospitals in southern Belarus, near Ukraine's border, and reported that morgues in the area were overflowing.
* The Ukrainian government has claimed that the Russian army sent mobile crematoriums to burn their own dead.
* "The problem with Russian bodies is really huge. It's thousands of them. Before the war, the weather was cold, it was okay but now we have problems ... I actually don't know what we will do in the next weeks."
* [There was one report of some Russian troops taking over a Ukrainian farm and using a huge caldron there to burn the bodies of their dead.]

‘In Makariv, 50km west of the capital, the Ukrainian authorities claimed the Russians had been “driven back”. When your correspondent tried to visit he found a different situation. Fierce fighting made it impossible to get into the town’
“In the centre of Kyiv, however, life is improving. Petrol is no longer rationed, and there is more traffic on main roads than at any time since the invasion began on February 24th. Bread is back on supermarket shelves. Trains enter and leave the city.”

* This story and headline are completely misleading. The Ukrainians never said the town was conflict-free, it just said the Russians had been pushed back. Surely WaPo understands how artillery works right? You don't have to be RIGHT THERE to shoot rounds that go boom.

In recent days, fewer Ukrainian images are being posted. And not just from largely cut-off areas like Mariupol. I believe this is self-censoring in response to the request to not post info that can be used to target Ukrainian assets, even when posted days after the fact. And what we are seeing, is often self-modified to hide locations. Like we see here:

Although from work I did in the past on photo interpretation, I'd like to see all of the background blurred, and the blurred area(s) much more thoroughly blurred. Cuts down on pieces of photos being combined to cough up what you were trying to obscure. It's surprising how easy it is to build a 3D mental map or procedural map of the area, and that 'map' can be more easily matched to another photo showing more area or to a sat image. The human mind is extremely good at that, and in remembering when/where you saw something that matched.
(I still can't upload photos. Wonder what changed...)

Russia's invasion of Ukraine ties to world hunger again...
Number of people facing extreme hunger in Sudan predicted to double
UN warns up to 18 million could be in need of aid by September as food prices soar due to conflict, poor harvests and economic crisis. The number of people who are severely hungry in Sudan could double by September as a result of poor harvests, economic crisis, internal conflict and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the UN has warned.
...
Sudan is dependent on wheat imports from the Black Sea region: about 50% of its wheat came from Russia last year. Any disruption to the flow will increase prices, which have already risen by 180% to $550 a tonne since the first quarter of 2021.
“The ripple effects created by the bullets and bombs landing in Ukraine will be felt far and wide, including here in Sudan, as families are set to suffer even further with basic meals becoming a luxury for millions,” said Rowe.

Ukrainian forces may have more main battle tanks and they had at the start of Russian invasion, because they've been remarkably successful at acquiring Russian vehicles (with the help of a few farmers) - Western officials
Western officials confirm a 7th Russian general was killed and that a brigade commander was killed by his own troops "as a consequence of the scale of losses that had been taken by his brigade".
Around 20 Russian BTGs are "no longer combat effective" officials estimate - out of 115-120 who were in the original invasion force. So Russia has lost "a sixth, maybe a fifth" of its effective troops
More on the Russian commander officials believe was killed by his own troops. The belief is he was "run over". Was the commander of 37th motor rifle brigade. [unclear at this time: run over vs. killed][does this mean the Russians are short on grenades?]
