New to the Playa/ Volunteering Q's

Post by emmac » Mon Feb 28, 2022 8:48 pm

Hey all :)

I am new to the Playa! My sister and I will be coming from Australia and hoping to contribute to Burning man 2022!!

Just wondering if there are any volunteer teams that still accept people to help during the event, even if they do not manage to get tickets?

Thanks!

Welcome emmac, nice to have you here on eplaya. There are lots of different groups you could volunteer with, but it's suggested that your first year you come and see and enjoy what Burning Man is all about and not get committed to working schedules. Making yourself helpful to anyone needing assistance is a perfect way break in.

My understanding is that if you volunteer with a department with set shifts, you would be eligible to get a ticket for the following year.

So tell us a bit about yourself and your sister. What do you do that gets you excited? An artist, builder, a maker?

Mr Sham has a good point. Even if you have been in the US for enough days to adjust your sleep schedule from OZ, you will be thrown into a sleep-cycle blender of being at about 4000' altitude, a disruption in eating times, ultra-bright sunlight trying to set your body's clock, and wanting to do all the night-time things. So that makes it hard to volunteer for a specific shift in advance.

You can go to Playa Info in Center Camp for ad-hoc volunteer opportunities when you get settled.

The main BurningMan.org website is exellent reading including https://burningman.org/event/participat ... irst-time/

Welcome to ePlaya and your first burn!

If you are coming all the way from OZ, the Western US is a fine walkabout of national parks and wild lands, gnarly mountains, fierce rivers, and hot springs, with many fine cities in between. Fuel prices will probably continue to be high, and rental vehicles are in short supply because all the rental companies sold their vehicles in the Covid recession, and are having trouble buying new ones. Nonetheless travel around the US is a great opportunity!

Hey there, welcome to ePlaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

I don't think you got a clear answer to this - I'm afraid the answer is no. You need to have a ticket to be part of the event; there is no way to volunteer in lieu of having one.

As others have mentioned, once you are there you can volunteer, and for some teams if you do enough volunteering it can make it easier to get a ticket the following year. In some cases that's just a guaranteed ability to buy a ticket, in others it may be a discounted ticket.

Papa Bear is right. Bur you might be able to volunteer in Reno even if you don't have a ticket but it won't get you a ticket for this year. I'm thinking of the Burner Bus and at the airport. Maybe other places too.
Everyone is so politically fucked up that they're segregating themselves in the name of equal rights and liberation.
