oh certainly, I don't "count" on luck, I'd just rather have it. I strive to be good and good at things, knowing it carries me forward. But, if luck is on your side, you have that much more advantage. Don't depend on it, but hope for it.
I was gifted a broken limb from a very old, very dark flowering lilac. I love the color of those. I cut it into lengths, striped sections of the below ground bark area, made holes and stuck the sticks in the ground last fall........it looks like a few are sprouting leaves! It almost looks like there are flower buds trying, as well, though I can't imagine they have much if any root system to support flowering. I guess they had the flower buds "set" already, and are pulling the trigger out of habit? I hope they don't take so much energy that the sticks don't root well. I need to do research to see if I should clip said flower buds off.
Heard from Da Mule on FB the other day related to my illness. I hope Da Mule shows up here at some point!
I'm reminded how we all used to post our flower photos in spring, and the jocularity as people began gearing up and getting excited for TTITD. sigh.

Sets out cheese doodles. Da Mule, how nice.
I had two houseplants for years. The geranium, I got in 1995, the other, a spider plant, around 2007. I paid just enough attention to them to keep them alive, but never grow or thrive. My sister repotted them for me a couple times over the years. The last two years I’ve really cared for them, bought good dirt, and they have grown and now are in 20 pots and quart yogurt containers all over my apartment, 3 geraniums, the rest happy spider plants. Two later arriving amaryllis bulbs are bringing spring too. I have no outside space, just a stair landing, but I feel I could really enjoy growing stuff if I had the opportunity. Food, trees, shade. Next lifetime.

I always think I'm going to grow a garden. then realize, I'm not. I do tractor work for my neighbor's garden, in promise of produce, and get none. I garden at Safeway now, and feel no regret. I'll do other things and buy food.

Larry made me a beautiful garden with raised beds. Pretty much if it is not a perennial, wildflower, or something bees like which sprung up on its own, I do not have a garden. I suck at growing stuff to eat.

Good morning bar. *fluffs NEB, runs quick duster over el pulpo*. Craftworks today. I have about 4 boom boxes in progress, speakers, blinkies, helmets with blinkies. Casting about for the soundtrack for the day. Listening to a book about a man who flew a Moth biplane to Tibet, was attempting to fly TO Everest, in the 1920’s. Figure it out along the way in spades.

Wait…
Ben Franklin story day here. Ken Burns latest. Extra videos of zoom talks about it and the new documentary streaming. A rare founder who’s thinking changed over his life. The past interests me though it may be my fantasy that it can be known accurately.

I'd say most of the founders were open to change. Much of what they wrote dealt with changing government if it was not working, of changing elected servants if they forgot their "place", and gave mechanisms to do this, peacefully.

Good day, ygmir. How are you feeling?
I think I’ll learn more about Ken Burns’ viewpoint than history, but he does use a lot of primary sources, and Franklin wrote a lot, a lot. Franklin was a scientist, and data could change his views. He went from owning and selling slaves to being part of the abolitionist movement. That is the specific change I have in mind. One that other founders did not make. I hope to see more explanation of how that happened for Franklin, today.

HI Elorrum
feeling a little better each day, thanks.
yeah, reading about what others "thought", though very interesting, IMHO, is still pretty subjective.
But Franklin was certainly the cream of the crop.
I think, often, in parsing people and events of the past, people don't take into consideration "the times", and view these people and events through the lens of today. Interesting, for sure, but perhaps a little out of focus?

I see your point, ygmir. Overall, though, I think there is respect for scholarship, years of study, and informed opinions about historical documents.
Lens of today question: do you understand the qualities, and power, of a media mogul better today then you did 40 years ago? Does that change how you would view a man who was a widely read writer, printer, newsman, paper producer, postmaster? Talk about vertical integration, a mogul. I think it’s a neat perspective we get, without changing what actually happened.
As an aside, Peter Coyote’s voice is what peace (or the equivalent gray noise frequencies) sounds like to my hind brain.
Coincidence, March is kite season? PBS?

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
yeah, "lens of today", is of course, subjective. I think as long as when we see and learn things, we understand it's all colored by our unique perspective, we can be open to hearing differing thoughts and not be clouded or offended.
An example I came up with, that helped me:
"The baby rabbit sees it's mother taken by an owl, and it's tragic, the owl babies in the nest get to eat, and rejoice"
It's all about perspective.

It is an owl, and it is a bunny, and what they do to each other, we can observe and note what happened. Value judgements, (what it means to the owl, to the rabbit, their relationship status) are different and do vary.

ECM, pulpo baconator flaming. How we view things, eh? I hope you are feeling better ygmir.
One interesting thing about Franklin I learned concerning the lightning rod: Church steeples and bell towers were big attractors, usually the tallest building in a town. Bell ringers died, fires were started. Some religious opinions opposed the lightning rod concept, because they felt it was going to minimize, maybe eliminate, one of the almighty’s greatest tools in threatening and punishing sinners.

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
Good afternoon, Bar! You guys would appreciate a local burner-owned bar here that we recently connected with. Seems to be made for day drinkers and people who aren't fucking around. Their drink specials are all shots, and "happy hour" is noon to 6. Oh, and they're open 24/7. It's simultaneously divey and arty all at once.
Super glad to hear you're on the mend, Yggy. Take things super easy, make sure you fully recover and sort of lay groundwork for future shenanigans you may want to get up to.
Oh yeah, that Ken Burns docu on Franklin.. I'd read some stuff about it and am looking forward to checking it out.
I'm trying to get through another project a little early so I can dive into some camp planning stuff. Between the last couple years and moving during winter this year, I feel like I'm getting an awful late start on things and I want to get more details to campmates. It also feels like I'm late to start on playa art projects, but I'm not sure if that's because I'm actually behind where I usually start or it just feels that way because the weather's warmer in southern Nevada than the bay area.

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
Some of it is, some of it isn't. We were last living in the south bay, which I think gets as low as the 30s/40s farenheit in winter (a couple frosty nights a year maybe), and then peak summertime can get up to 105-110 farenheit. Las Vegas can get into the low 30s in winter (we had ice in the birdbath one morning), and then summertime easily gets to 110 and probably a little hotter (or at least feels like it). In California those were rare extremes, with most of the time somewhere comfortably in the middle. In Nevada there were a couple hard weeks of chilly weather, but after that it starts getting warm again FAST.
Gardening-wise, in the bay area you start looking to plant tomatoes and herb gardens in mid-to-late March. In Las Vegas apparently there is usually one last cold snap in February where you need to watch out for frost, and after that people go nuts.
Pani and I both used to come out to Vegas a lot in previous lives. When I worked in the tech industry I came out dozens of times, and had the opportunity to either come in early or stay after the trade shows, so I got to know the area and I was familiar with the climate. She used to work for a company that made trade show booths, and I think came out more often than I did. But the nature of her job was that when she was in town, she was on the show floor working on booths... or she was sleeping in her hotel room, and never got to explore. Before we got serious about the move, we made a couple trips in the summer months so she could get a sense of how murderous the weather can be... it's hot (hairdryer on high heat in the face), but doable for us both. She used to live in Tucson and I've lived in Phoenix (both are hair dryers in the face) and New Orleans (like a hot wet mop in the face).
It will make our drive to and from the playa longer, but on the flip side we may not need as much time to acclimate to the weather.

Hey there Trilo! Nice to see you strolling around these parts again. It's funny, somehow I would have thought that Vegas was closer to the playa than the Bay area, but, not even close. Nevada proves itself to be a really big state yet again. Congratulations on the change of venue. Hope your current project is going well.
And thanks Elorrum, for mentioning the Ben Franklin doc. I might have overlooked it otherwise, but instead was able to catch most of it. Another solid effort by Ken Burns.
Lots of outdoor chores here these days, preparing for spring. Things are beginning to green up, and change more and more every day.

Hey there BVB! where ya been?
Glad to hear spring is springing for you!
Ugh, we got two storms, that were our winter. Otherwise it's been spring since January. Looks to be a long dry summer...again...
Sounds like you're happy with your move, and that's great!
Maybe I missed it, but why can't we post youtube vids here any more?

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
The travel times aren't too bad either way. From SF proper (where we lived for many years) it was roughly 6ish hours. From the south bay (where we lived for the last few burns) it was just under 7. From the new joint, it's looking like an 8ish hour trek. What's interesting is that the road from Las Vegas to the playa doesn't pass directly through Reno. On the last few trips to the playa we'd been stopping off in Reno, giving us to recharge and hit the playa fresh, or get a nice shower and recharge before heading back to defaultia at the end. If we want to do that, it makes more sense to do that maybe in Fernley instead.
Another plus for Las Vegas is it's not such an elevation change. Our last place was a little under 100 feet above sea level, and now we're a little over 2K elevation. As we head north we'll go through some fun mountain scenery as we make our way up to the playa's 4,000ish foot elevation, but no going up and over the Sierras! Don't get me wrong, the Sierra Nevadas are beautiful country, but you're effectively driving up and down the side of the mountain range. In a fully loaded vehicle and potentially in heavy traffic, that can be its own adventure. In fact it was going up the Sierras on the way to the playa in 2017 that finally killed our old playa van (may she rest in peace, she served us well).
Man, you aren't kidding about the outdoor chores. I spent much of the day outside yesterday and it got into the 90s, whew! And after months of supply chain headaches, we finally got our garage entry door installed (the one in the house was badly broken). It's the most simple, basic thing, and it's a detail nobody outside the house can even see, but man it feels good to finally have that resolved.
