2022 One Item A Day For Burning Man

Post by FlyingMonkey » Mon Feb 07, 2022 7:45 pm

I didn't see that anyone had started this yet so I'll start.

- I cleaned my garage over the weekend and found/washed clothes from 2019. I really suck at unpacking.

- My 2022 project is "Beer Bike 2.0". I've learned so much from previous failures.

I’m running my tv audio, and music, today from my small solar set up, checking out a newish battery and its capacity. (This can be a very inspiring thread. Thank you Flying Monkey.)
A cheap charge controller shows a green light after a full day. Considering the volume difference between here and on playa, it’s probably not a fair comparison for draw.😎

I had a long text exchange with the new guy. Lining up the ducks for getting a small camp out in the playa this year. Continuing the camp. I've turned over the reins of leadership, though, as anarchists, this means nothing. There's a lot of responsibility with bringing a camp. Beyond the personal responsibility of simply camping in the desert. The paperwork, keeping up on application dates, having a credit card available for $1500, having campmates with that $, placement references, BRC HOA review, campmate background credit check, dj visa application, tickets for nanny... Burning ain't what it used to be.

I'm considering starting my own Thread on this forum covering how to create, build, and destroy a camp, on playa, on eplaya. The warning, not the example

Go for it!
It would likely save a lot of people a lot of pain, grief and disappointment, while enhancing the experience for many.

Not everyone can learn from the mistakes of others (lead a horse to water etc.), but many can. At the least it should draw strong parallels from their default world experiences that triggers a number of warning bells. Learning to fly is significantly easier if you've taken ground school - or at least read 'the owner's manual'.

I bought a 12x12 ft ground tarp today, which will fit nicely under my 13x13 ft shade structure and leave room to stake my tie downs at the perimeter.

I got stucco tape for taping reflectix over my camper bus windows on the outside. I have reflectix inside but despite that and an aluminet drape on the outside, the bus still got super hot last time in 2019. The cool kids (haha) say that the best thing is reflectix taped on the outside, so the heat never gets inside your windows to bounce around in the interior. I have some of the reflectix I need, still need to buy another roll.

Being completely unable to sleep since 2am, I decided to try mixing up a cup of golden milk from powdered supplies to see if it would work on-playa.

Powdered coconut milk, turmeric & spices powder, some Anthony's heavy cream powder, and hot water. It wasn't mixable with a spoon, it clumped too much, but I have one of those little battery operated milk frothers and that worked perfectly. Added that to my playa packing list. Experiment was a success!

Now if I could just get back to sleep... thought warm milk would help but nope.

Starting to think on how to jenga pack my car for the burn.

I’ve got a uhaul reserved but I might not be allowed to return it to a Reno location. Reno, the town I live in…. I was told that might be the situation, so if that holds true. I’ll have to weigh out the option of saying “no fuck you uhaul, here’s your truck back” to a local/Reno location or taking my own vehicle. :coffee:

Today's experiment in playa kitchen prep was making Kodiak pancakes with powdered milk and a touch of heavy cream powder, and water. Have to add about a quarter cup of water above what the recipe calls for to deal with the extra powdered stuff, but then it's perfect. One more link shattered in the chain that binds me to coolers and ice!

Set up both car ports, painted over rust & washed 2019 Playa Dust off of the roof & walls.

- Really, this should count for 2 things since they are such a PITA to set up by yourself.

I looked over the miscellaneous bits of shelf wood and plywood in our storage shed and picked out pieces to make the luggage bay shelves for my converted shuttle bus, to make packing for the burn easier.

Bought some RV water tanks and gravity filler hatch to build into my moving truck. Bought an old moving truck for $1000 in 2019 and did a bunch of work on it, camped with it, planned to sell it afterward....never did. Pretty glad about that now.

Dry-fit pack of my vehicle. This is the major bulky items (bike, folding table, cooler, swamp cooler) intended to bring and how the various tubs (mostly empty/ rough packed) will be stacked and organized.

This gives me clear limitations on packing. If it doesn't fit in those tubs, something else must be exchanged for its volume. (Also a nice reminder that I probably don't have any reason to buy anything, unless it's directly replacing something no longer functioning from the last burn.)

Also, keeps my packing prioritized for Last-in-first-out style. I love real-life Tetris!

Confirmed my schedule with the AEZ stage folks, and ordered a shiny sequin top to wear for my blues and jazz vocals set! Also put together a set list, and now I need to pare it down to 30 minutes or less. :D

Brought an interactive flapping bird (with branch in beak) and a more static flying sheep on its cloud.

(and two carloads of other stuff, returned with some mud more) Was a sheepish happening in Dutch swamp.

And was just realized doh, sequins. Moop waiting to happen. Canceled the order and I'm finding something else to wear. Got too caught up in things and forgot.

Over the past 3 days I have shopped for and packed the non perishable food/drink items I'm taking to the burn, and gone through my tea and sun-tea supplies. I feel much more prepared!

Yesterday I took all of the camping-non-burning-man stuff out of the bus, and moved some things back onto it, like our camp cups and a USB fan and the second LED lantern.

Today I went to an auto parts store and got a kit to re-glue the rearview mirror mount to the windshield. When I went to the bus yesterday, I found the rearview mirror had come off the glass, and was hanging by the backup camera & DC power cables. (It has an LED strapped onto it for the backup cam). I followed the kit instructions and am leaving it to set for 24 hours, will try re-hanging the mirror again tomorrow.

I also picked up some reflectix so that I now have enough to do the exterior windows for the burn; got stucco tape already. Wups, I need to remember to add microfiber rags to my packing list so I can wipe down the surface before applying tape...done...

Painted a box, cut some 2x4s as a frame, started going thru old knick knacks, figuring out photos to copy, what to insert, momentos. It's gonna burn.

I'm putting together a little alter shrine for my dead people, hopefully to burn. There are my best friends Willie and Peaches, my sister Wanda, my nephew Jonathan, Sive, a spirit that was too big for this world, and the list trails off in time, stretching back further than just the past year. But it is a small alter. I'm counting on others to get it burned. It has to be concise.

But these people were nothing alike. I thought about how the various people would not be connected, their token of remembrance so much different than each other, people nothing alike, without shared views and experiences, trying to capture the honor of them, a symbol of the loss of that soul. Is that possible within one small simple box? Should those souls mix?

But the alter is actually for me, and I am their alter, they all fit right inside this box, nice and comfortable. They are very connected, right here. So my nephew who would have no idea what the hell was going on with Sive, my dogs and my dear sister, all together. In the box.

My last Burn, my life completely collapsed, friend dead, me dead, I put an alter/shrine (photo) on the remnants of the Burn, and just for a moment, it was the largest flame there over a bed of glowing embers, that had also once been much more. It burned oh so very bright.

So, what have you done today to further your Burn?

Made some quick shelves for the luggage bay of my camper bus. They're just bolted onto the wire rack shelves that are on either side of the luggage bay (and which in turn are bolted into the floor and walls). I still have to remove my water jugs to get my shade canopy out, but at least all the other stuff is not on top of them any more!
