Hello Burners,
Virgin burner here.
I am just curious about some details. IF one is dropped off at the ticket gate, is it possible to get into Burning Man on foot? And, if so, how far is it to the playa from the gate?
Thank you for the information.
-Roger
Can you walk in from the ticketing gate to the playa?

Re: Can you walk in from the ticketing gate to the playa?
Negative.
You must have a ride in.
It is 2.5 miles from gate to center camp. No one wants you walking that in 100 degree heat or the middle of a moonless night, dragging your gear and water in.
It is much better to score a ride share in Reno with other burners.
If you are thinking about a commercial ride share like Lyft or Uber … it has been done before, but once you are at or near gate, you must have a ride in. Best strategy for this fools errand (discouraged) is to end your ride in Gerlach, maybe at the gas station, then try to hitch a ride in with someone - best if you are traveling light, have ticket in hand and not at Will-Call, and are relaxed enough to embrace the vagabond spirit. It could become a clusterfuck real quick.

No no nope. In fact the main site says you will be turned back in the vehicle you hired to Gerlach. You need to be in a vehicle with a vehicle pass and ticketed driver, past Gerlach.

“Do Not Show Up at Gate in a Taxi, Rideshare Company, or Hired Car
If you’re planning to arrive in BRC in a taxi, via a ridehare company, or hired car, you cannot be dropped off at Gate or anywhere near Black Rock City. You WILL be turned away and sent back to Gerlach. The last drop-off point available is Bruno’s in Gerlach. From there, you will need to find a ride into BRC with a friendly playa-bound Burner.“

In some ways that is unfortunate. Seems like some friendly burners could offer to pick people up as their contribution to the burn.

It’s a dangerous place to be a pedestrian. I picked up a pedestrian in a near whiteout at night in 2008 at gate because I almost hit him. I think it’s a good policy. Hitching from Gerlach might be a possibility.
