What tent now?
My trusty Coleman tent only had 4 Burns in it, and has gone on to the great Walmart in the sky. Coleman no longer makes it. I'm looking for a large-ish (10'X10'? 12'X9'?) tent that can fit within a 12' wide Monkey Hut with either no windows, or at least windows that can be zipped closed.
Any suggestions?

I think it is fiscal year end close out time for sporting goods, seeing discounts in my fb feed. Alps and Stoic make large dome tents with full coverage rain flys, not as good as zip up windows, but a good playa feature as well as not all mesh sides. Check backcountry, REI, usual outlets.

Re: What tent now?
Get a Kodiak Canvas tent. Put a Black Rock Shade over it. Done and dusted.
There are several different sizes, each better than the next one.

Re: What tent now?
10x10 kodiak has a peak height of 78”, weighs about seventy lbs., and packs into a size that may take a lot of your cargo space, a lot more than your old Coleman, (unless you had an old canvas Coleman.) (10x14 packs down to 30x16, poles are 48x5.5). Coming in at close to $600, you could buy 4-5 new nylon 6 man tents. If you have the money and a garage or storage unit, a large vehicle, and like the secure feeling the tent you may use 5-10 times in your life is super duper, sure get a kodiak, It’s very good quality, playa proven.

My Coleman lasted 4 years before moving on/dying. I got a 10x10 canvas Kodiak tent and have used it since. Amazing difference. Keeps out the dust, I can stand up in it . Several others in our camp have bought them and we are all in love with them.

Re: What tent now?
Where do you live? I see what looks like a great Coleman, CANVAS!, tent that is on Craigslist, Napa, "bay area".
However, it's pricy and who knows if the owner would take FAR less.
I have a WeatherMaster coleman, but for years they have made them what looks like 80% screen....the entire roof being screen only protected by a fly.
Not only is it near impossible to find a nylon tent that can be completely sealed (my Coleman had window "covers" but I had to use glue on velcro on two of the sides..it works very well. I forget the name of the velcro but it is not "stick on", instead it is "iron on".
Of even more importance is to find a tent that does NOT use pencil thin fiberglass rods. Forget it. They break.
BTW, no matter what tent you have, bring a roll of fiber tape. Duct tape isn't the answer for everything.

I've used a 10x10 Kodiak at BM. You can buy it from the Bas Pro Shop. It's a really nice tent. However, like any other tent, it gets hot inside after 10am. Even with a reflective tarp on top. But if you've made it through 4 burns in a Coleman tent, then you know what you're getting yourself into.

Oztrail 12'x9' or Kodiak, not that many other options in that size(I use Kodiak, but both are pretty similar as far as I know)claybcook wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 9:13 amMy trusty Coleman tent only had 4 Burns in it, and has gone on to the great Walmart in the sky. Agree with the Kodiak. I have a Springbar tent and am not sure if they're still making them. This too, does the trick.

Re: What tent now?
Kodiak Springbar canvas is the way. It seals up completely so the dust can't get in and coat everything and you can stand up inside it.

Re: What tent now?
$224, 18 lbs, 8"x24" packed size, full coverage rain fly with a zipped vestibule to stash things out of sight, not much open mesh. peak height 72". This is the sort of tent I'd be shopping for if I needed a new tent. I'm on my second tent since 2007, and it's in good shape. I have a stoic that is discontinued, it has aluminum poles, and a modified shape with straighter sides, zip up windows, and a vestibule on both ends. I just can't store, pack, or transport a kodiak/springbar in a small hatchback and bring the other stuff I like as well.

That's less than a low end springbar or kodiak that start around $600. I don't know how much more relatively clean you can stay in a canvas tent, or what that experience is worth dollar wise. I haven't had a tent full of dust, unless I left it open.
