Doesn’t seem like many jobs.

https://www.npr.org/2023/03/13/11630753 ... oved-biden
ConocoPhillips said the project could generate as much as $17 billion in new revenue for federal, state and local governments. The company also said it would create 2,500 construction jobs and roughly 300 permanent jobs.

The ConocoPhillips Alaska's Willow project will produce an estimated 160,000 barrels of oil per day over the next 30 years. Burning this oil will produce 260 million tons of carbon dioxide, equal to the annual output of 66 American coal plants.

Why iodized salt?

It shrinks and prevents goiters!!!

Early Chinese medical writings in approximately 3600 B.C. were the first to record the decreases in goiter size upon ingestion of seaweed and burnt sea sponge [1]. Although iodine was yet to be discovered, these remedies remained effective and their use continued globally, as was documented in writings by Hippocrates, Galen, Roger, and Arnold of Villanova in later centuries [1]

Iodized Salt
In the U.S., iodized salt first became available on grocery shelves in Michigan on 1 May 1924, spurred largely by the series of reports by Cowie, Marine, and others in the preceding few years [14]. The region had largely been severely iodine deficient, and Hartsock in 1926 described an outbreak of thyrotoxicosis in adults who took iodized salt living in the Great Lakes region of the goiter belt

"Guo, who is known by multiple different names, including Miles Guo and Miles Kwok, Brother Seven, and The Principal, has lived in the United States since 2015 after fleeing China, reportedly to duck looming corruption charges.

In 2018, he founded two nonprofit organizations, the Rule of Law Foundation and the Rule of Law Society, which engaged in a public relations campaign against the Chinese Communist Party.

Guo "used the nonprofit organizations to amass followers who were aligned with his purported policy objectives in China and who were also inclined to believe [Guo's] statements regarding investment and money-making opportunities," the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York said in a statement on the criminal case.

Bannon, who served former President Donald Trump as senior White House advisor for less than a year, at one point was on the board of directors of the Rule of Law Society."

In a 5-0 decision, the Appellate Division in Manhattan said Smartmatic USA alleged in "detailed fashion" how Fox News and some anchors and guests "effectively endorsed and participated in (defamation) with reckless disregard for, or serious doubts about" whether the company engaged in election fraud. Smartmatic had sought $2.7 billion in damages, saying Fox News knowingly lied about its technology and how it was used in order to boost ratings, and keep Trump supporters from defecting to the right-wing networks Newsmax and One America News.

A Fox News producer on Monday filed a pair of explosive lawsuits against the right-wing talk channel, alleging that the network's lawyers coerced her into providing misleading testimony in Dominion Voting Systems' $1.6 billion defamation case against the company.

The lawsuits filed by Abby Grossberg, who worked as a senior booking producer for Maria Bartiromo and most recently head of booking for Tucker Carlson, accused Fox's legal team of having engaged in wrongful conduct as it prepared her for a pre-trial deposition in the election technology company's case.

The lawsuit continued to describe a culture at Carlson's program in which women were subjected to crude terms and in which jokes about Jewish people were made out in the open. Grossberg named Carlson and members of his staff in the lawsuit filed in New York.

Astronomers have described it as a once-in-a decade event.

The object, named 2023 DZ2, was discovered a month ago.

At 19:49 GMT on Saturday, it will pass within 175,000km of the Earth after flying past the Moon.

It is rare for such a huge asteroid - estimated to be between 40 and 90m in diameter - to come so close to the planet.

A book you say? Well, pardon my August to mid September can’t breathe my local air due to wildfire smoke gasp. Or my frosty making snowmen all through the month of March in the desert atmospheric river dismay. “Disillusioned with our disconnected societies, she had an aha moment during her first Burning Man sunrise.” Roxanne Jessi traveled 6 continents in one year, to Burning Man Regionals, because hour for hour, there’s no better way to burn fossil fuel and heat the planet. She is a self proclaimed “roving burner” has been to a dozen burns around the globe. Checking up on how global burning man culture is spread like a thin shmeer of a few mighty elite burners jetting all over the planet, Roxanne Jessi wrote about it in her book out now published by burningman.org.

She applied for a 2022 honoraria though she had no experience whatsoever (why start small? With perhaps handling a tool?)
“Wide-eyed, I scanned the Burning Man Project website and realized I had just under two weeks to submit the first stage of the Black Rock City Honoraria art grant application. In those weeks, I took the seeds of an idea and sketched it into being. With no artistic or building background I had to be resourceful. Our human networks are such that when we employ a little Radical Self-reliance we usually find the help we need.”

Not showing awareness of this common playa oxymoron, she continues, “I reached out to architects in my wider circle and shared the concept. When a cause ignites you, words and emotions seem to come to the surface like a rallying cry. From this place magic happens, and collaborations are made.”

A rollicking journey. I wonder if reading it in its entirety will wash the first impression I have pre-conceived?

https://journal.burningman.org/author/roxanejessi/

From the burning man project Facebook page:
“What the heck is it like to spend a year attending as many Regional Events as possible? In 2018, Roxane Jessi set out to get to the heart of an ever-evolving global culture by participating in seven Burning Man Regional Events on six continents. "Once Upon a Time in the Dust: Burning Man Around the World" is the story of her rollicking journey.

Read all about it: https://burningman.org/news/books-about ... -the-dust/

“It's also the third book from Burning Man Publishing — and the first of its kind to provide a glimpse into Burning Man's eclectic Regional Network.”
”On second thought, Let’s not go to Camelot. It’s a silly place.”

The Republican megadonor whose gifts to the supreme court justice Clarence Thomas have come under the spotlight has a private collection including a garden of statues of dictators, including Mussolini and Stalin; Nazi memorabilia; and paintings including two works by Adolf Hitler, the Washingtonian reported.

“I still can’t get over the collection of Nazi memorabilia,” the Washingtonian quoted an anonymous source as saying, regarding a visit to Harlan Crow’s Texas home. “It would have been helpful to have someone explain the significance of all the items. Without that context, you sort of just gasp when you walk into the room.”

“For recreationists, it means they’re not going to be hiking on ground until August,” Jeff Anderson told the Appeal on Monday. “It’s just a ton of snow, especially in the Carson and Walker (river) basins. They’re absolutely blowing away the old records.”

Speaking of performative greenwashing bull shit. Thanks to our friends in the Biden administration, starting July the sale and manufacture of incandescent and CFL lightbulbs will be banned in the USA, forcing us all to live the rest of our lives in the cold, flickering and unreliable light of LEDs.

Freedom isn’t free or something like that.

Forget Big Imagination....

The young creators of a ‘TED meets Burning Man’ conference bought a $40-million mountain in Utah to build a Davos for hipsters. What could go wrong?

The Summit Series conferences are wildly popular extravaganzas. But building an eco-friendly ski resort for the rich and famous is quite a different undertaking.

https://fortune.com/longform/summit-pow ... topia/amp/

The lesson is BRC and the BMORG's longevity is the result of a lot of participation over 37 years. How many cumulative burners do we have? BRC maybe 2 million. How many in the regionals? We have continuing work to do with our hosts in Gerlach, Black Rock High Rock, and Fly Geyser.

Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos saga is polarizing.

The media is picking up on:
'
Where do you go when your life’s work and reputation go up in flames? … Burning Man.

Ms. Holmes and Mr. Evans went to the desert oasis for moneyed bohemians. She burned a tribute to Theranos. “There was an incredible sense of grief because I’d given everything to it, my whole life, since I’d been 18,”
'

While the Theranos saga is not normal, the media is exploiting the burning part. To burners, burning an effigy seems completely normal.

A movie, part 1 & 2, "follows four longtime friends — played by Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen and Diane Keaton — who form a book club."

Bergen suggests they film part 3 in BRC.

Ugh ugh. Pure evidence they don’t know shit, but like their impression of it. Colonizers club. Gertrude Stein nailed it, describing the town she had grown up in, Oakland, CA, that no longer existed as it had been: “There is no there, there.” Black Rock City.

A quick google of Candice Bergen and Burning man showed 4 news sites that had already picked up the titillating off the cuff proposal. Hopefully the org has in place a policy, even if no one knows about it, and no journalist cares to research it. https://journal.burningman.org/2017/11/ ... nal-films/

Influencer Loren Gray set out to cure any of her 54.4 million followers' Coachella FOMO by assuring them that "most influencers, or a lot of influencers," just pretend to attend the festival.

"They just drive their little butts out to the desert to take Instagram photos, make TikToks — GRWMs, whatever — and then they drive back. That's it," Gray said. The video has since been viewed more than 3.6 million times.
