A/C & ShiftPod + staying cool at noon

Post by AspenMusicMan » Thu Jun 15, 2023 1:55 pm

Howdy fellow burners. The Reddit strike is really screwing with my ability to get ready before the Burn, so here I am hoping to find a savior in this de-commodified forum. I’m about to purchase a ShiftPod Mini, but I am lost on what A/C setup to use.

TLDR: I'm trying to figure out the most cost-effective way to deliver cool air to my ShiftPod without damaging the structural components or leaving mold so I can go to sleep at 4 am and wake up at noon.

I need one that preferably only uses solar, or minimal power as I am flying into Reno and won’t be carrying much with me. Keeping in mind that the ShiftPod mini doesn’t have prebuilt ventilation holes, will the swamp cooler be strong enough since I’ll have to leave a bit of the entry unzipped in order for the pipe to fit in? Also in terms of mildew… the last thing I want is mold on my expensive tent.

Looking at the following three options for A/C:

1. Creating a swamp cooler (https://www.theplayalabs.com/swamp-cooler), utilizing a regular box. (cheapest option) but I'm worried about mold since the shift pod insulates. The trick would prob just to disconnect it the night before I leave and have it dry out.

2. Purchase a Frankencooler (https://frankencooler.com/) and an ice box separately. Frankencooler acts more as a legit A/C.

3. Purchase a swamp cooler that’s attached to an icebox. Seems to be the easiest, and uses the least amount of electricity. Maybe one with dual vents to reduce moist air? A bunch on eBay.

What do you guys think will work the best? Ideally, want to attach to solar panels to minimize fossil fuel use and maximize portability.

The most cost effective way to keep your shiftpod cool enough for some morning 💤 is to put it in shade.

If you can place it behind a large well parked vehicle that blocks the sunrise … you’re good till ~ 10am.

4-10am … 6 hours of sleep … at Burning Man … that would be an achievement.

All the other gizmos listed need lots of work and care for me to ever bother with. Either daily ice, water, cleaning and then the solar panels and their care and maintenance …

Shade is a one-time investment that lasts the 10 days …

Good luck.
