Participants bring experimental detailed weather forecast to the Playa

Post by some seeing eye » Wed Jun 21, 2023 6:47 am

The Black Rock Desert is a fierce mistress. Until we get free real time low earth orbit multispectral satellite lookdown, we have to depend on National Weather Service models. Volunteers have developed a 72 hour hyper local forecast of temperature, wind, rain, and dust storms. They are working on calibrating the dust storms at Juplaya.

From the developer: "The time horizon is 72 hours, and the daily forecast is online roughly every day at 7AM PST. The forecast covers an area of roughly 50x50 miles, centered on the black rock desert. The horizontal resolution is roughly 1000 ft, every 30 minutes."

The 88NV weather station is back on line for 2023 as of 10AM playa time Wednesday August 23. It is at the airport at Point 5.

The participant who built that AI calibrated the dust storms on Juplaya, so it may not be accurate with the rainfall we had, or may yet have.

According to the BMORG website, the webcast is for weekend warriors only:

Given the number of St*rlunks, you never know what participants will broadcast!

I think the original Weather Underground was 2 guys, and they may have been burners. They grew it and sold it to IBM as part of the IBM weather megalith. IBM just sold it to a buyout group. https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/22/ ... r_company/.
