HI BVB!! Always good insights, thanks.
yeah to all you said.
Also, I'd add, that in reading some of what he wrote, and even in conversation with him at TTITD, Larry's vision was that the "big burn", was transitory, and the ideal was that people would break up into smaller, more intimate "regionals".
One might guess he saw this coming, the event spiraling as it has the last several years.

Did Larry imagine we would make real friends and rendezvous with them? That we would build our own events to see those people, and others likeminded in our regions? That the ease of air travel that makes world distances meaningless would bring in hoards of fickle wealthy people who build and share nothing? That they are there for a photo to post most of all? That so many of them would crowd the small participant/makers out? That big money would be such a critical element? Eh. I’m hoping he would have given it the finger and started another free party somewhere.ygmir wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2024 6:50 amHI BVB!! Always good insights, thanks.

well, rhetorically, and as a total assumption, I'd say Larry did imagine we'd make real friends, etc. And, I'd also say that breaking into small regionals, plays directly into that. People could go to any regional they wanted, of course.Elorrum wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2024 3:02 pmDid Larry imagine we would make real friends and rendezvous with them? There’s a social key, Larry saw it, the intoxicating drug of neighborliness, available for all of us to try out. Did I care what janky art came out of it? I’m not certain that any of the material parts were in my expectation as long as it felt friendly. That was the miraculous part for me. Size and grandeur, not so much.

Yep. There are a lot of things that draw me out to BRC; the art, the joy and absurdity, the engineering, even the vastness of the place as a whole... but it ultimately comes down to the people.
I've always liked the sig line that Jella displayed on her posts when she was hanging out here... so much so that I still recall it...

I am going out this year. Driving out with a friend of mine. May bring an art piece I've wanted to do since 2009, may bring a tiny bar that I wanted to do in 2010.
It's going to be alright.

We had beautiful weather this past weekend. I think it boosted the stranger friendliness quotient as people were unfolding a bit in the sunshine. I passed by a new restaurant being painted and fixed up. I may want to try that in a few weeks, the people were very pleasant as I walked by. How’s the west side, ygmir?

Same here, I have daffodils and narcissus blooming, plum trees have a few flowers, which usually means it's going to snow! But, been springlike the last few days. Been starting to move wood chips: the tree company was doing work for PGE, and asked if they could bring me some chips. I said "sure", dump here, and here. I didn't pay close attention, and they brought me about 60 cubic yards.... that's one of 6 piles the same size....
and, had a 40" black oak fall in the big winds the other day: It'll become firewood and lumber. Nice to have a sawmill....

We got a little snow, and a fair amount of rain so far from this "big storm". It's not living up to the hype, but still, a nice one.

Hi Sput!
yeah, you'll find it's gotten much more quiet around here these last few years. A few of us still pop in to see who's around and all, though.
Sorry I missed martini night, but, feel free to grab a mug from ENECM (Elorrums Never Ending Coffee Machine).
How's things in the great Midwest (assuming you're still there)?
We've been getting a nice winter, a few big storms, but otherwise nothing like last year, when I had 4' of snow on the ground, right about now.

Pretty quiet these days. Hope everyone is doing fine.
For those keeping score at home, it appears that the $1500 FOMO tickets (as well as the $2500's and VP's) are still available 30 hours after the sale began. Last year the $1500's sold out immediately.
(I would have posted in the "Ticket" topic area, but I wasn't able to for some reason)
i think that last year has scared away many of the tourists.
I agree but would argue the last 2 years (half my camp got Covid in 22). Most of us have been saying we need a few shitty years to thin the herd. Looks like we got what we wanted (I guess). Those who embrace Radical Self-Reliance see it as a challenge, those who don't won't be back.
It will be interesting to see when the main sale sells out.
good.

Warming up, with weekend snow over the pass perhaps? I’m headed there with chains. It’s an annual worry, and I cancelled the last 2 years. I made a rickshaw from a trike axle kit, and hope I don’t injure anyone with it.
I’m sad to put my down comforter away, but it isn’t cold enough to sleep with it now.

I'm sure your rickshaw will be fine. Killbuck is a wisp of a man, so should not strain the limits at all...
also a pro tip from experience (under the influence): it's easier to pull a rickshaw, than to push it. Much like the old tv commercial..
