Advice Shiftpod

Hello burners,

I have been doing burningman since those last 2 years and already tried a yurt (with A/C) and a tent (Without A/C).

Since we are coming from Paris and it's a long trip for us (2) we are thinking about doing it either in a tent or a shiftpod and I'm looking for some advices since we can't do it in a yurt.

We were thinking about doing it in a tent but we don't know which A/C to bring and what should we bring with us to make it work properly (generator ? but we are driving to the playa with the burner express bus so idk...)
Do you maybe have advices on some (cheap and trusty) A/C solution or alternatives we could find in Reno (which is where we land)

I was also thinking about a shiftpod, but i found crazy prices on their website : 1600$... What do you guys think about it, have you done it without an A/C ? What do you think about it ? Is it viable ? Is it possible to travel with it in the burner express ? Do you have alternative ?
Pros : Pretty convenient to set up and tear down
Cons : Expensive, is it viable ? Travel with the burner express ?

Do you know where can i find shiftpods other than on their website ? Any recommendations or help will be very appreciated.

Why do you think you need an AC? Most go without one, personally, I have never used an AC in my 12 years Burning.

You have limited yourself to two different types of housing. There are a lot of Coleman tents out there, a lot cheaper and somewhat less comfortable but can work just fine. Search this forum for mesh on tents.

Personally, I use a Kodiak.

An evaporative cooler will drop the temperature in your tent up to about 20 degrees. There are lots of threads on her on how to build one. They can be powered by a 12V battery.

Thanks for your reply and telling me about the 12v battery powered A/C I’ll look it up.

Last year in tent was ok but not that great without an A/C that’s why i asked for advices especially about shiftpod cause i haven’t seen a lot of threads talking about that one…

If someone can help me out about that and give me more information and recommendations.

The amount of camping gear the BxB allows is very limited. You can fit a tent, but shade is a challenge, and I would be surprised they would allow a generator because of the fuel.

Since you have been for 2 years and are connected to your regional, you might find a way to share infrastructure. Ideally share a ride with people you camp with. Some camps have group shade for their tenters.

Adding an electricity need triples, quadruples? What you need, and now Tetris it onto the bxbus? An air conditioner and a generator or solar battery setup, of enough wattage? Plus a shift pod? (a full backseat or trunk of a car right there.). Man, difficult. I’d love to know how you’d engineer it, honestly it would be a work of art. Please keep us updated.

I think about how I would handle my food and water when I think of the bus… wonder about a bike.

Why even waste the time, effort and money.

Nothing you can bring on the Burner Express bus will give you any cooling.

You’ve done a tent with no cooling before … stick with that and enjoy your burn.

I know this doesn't help you for this year.... but next year (if we enjoyed pur first year enough to come back) I have an idea of running a camp called yurtica with the idea of building a hexayurt fortress with a 55 gallon swamp cooler. This will allow for more temp sensitive individuals a sense of relief and a place to comfortably cool off/party during the hottest portion of the day. Again, this is my first year.. maybe I'm getting to ahead of myself

Our camp used 55 gallon drum swamp coolers in 24 foot 5/8 domes with a white vinyl cover. The domes were divided into pie shape sleeping areas with curtains and an about 10' central spot for the cooler. With a high ceiling some heat could rise. They were pleasant, not AC cool. I don't know what our water consumption or generator consumption was.

One tenter suggests aluminized tarps to cover the tent for BxB. One brand is SOL Surv*ve Outd**rs L*nger. That camper uses binder clips/spring clamps to attach the tarps onto the outside of their tent. That doesn't have an air gap. Aluminet packs well under compression and some people find some tough collapsable telescoping poles. Then you have to get into lag screw anchors and the driver for them, so hopefully you can borrow the driver for installing and removing from a neighbor.

I have a few small kelty shades, they come in a narrow backpack maybe 18”, like this https://www.backcountry.com/b/kelty-sun ... lsrc=aw.ds playa tested, they flex, don’t flap. put chairs in the corner in the biggest wind. A small 4 man tent with a full rainfly, nap in the shade, sleep at night as much as possible in the tent, or put tent under shade… I think it would work on the bus.
