Partying during Early Arrival?

Post by sparr » Tue Aug 20, 2024 5:10 am

I asked this nine years ago and the common wisdom seemed to contradict the official rules.

This year the official site for SAPs says
Any person who is on the playa before the event begins should be there to build or work. This is not a time to "get the party started early."
[You] must hold onto the SAP and present it when requested by any Burning Man staff member.
Misuse of Theme Camp SAPs may lead to cancellation of all SAPs for your camp, can affect standing with Placement, and may affect future Stewards Sale tickets and placement.
This year my camp's instructions on the subject are as follows:
If you are awarded a Work Access Pass, you are agreeing that you WILL NOT leave camp on anything but official business until sunset on Friday Aug. 25th. Even after that, we must be VERY careful until the gates open. Expect to be questioned by BM staff and expect to have to show your WAP.
I am pretty sure people will still be out partying during build week. I'd like to have the typical amount of fun while minimizing my chances of getting myself or my camp in trouble.

Does anyone have any newer insight on the real situation here?
If you want to make a reply about my personality instead of about what this thread is about, don't clutter this thread, post over here instead.

Hi Sparr
A little too anal, a little too dictatorish.
There is more to EA than eat, sleep, work.
If I stayed a a camp where they wanted me to obey those rules, I would leave.
If those rules where published before I paid dues/asked to join, I wouldn't join.
Everyone is so politically fucked up that they're segregating themselves in the name of equal rights and liberation.

My understanding is that the BLM has gotten crankier over the years about people being out partying when they are supposedly there to work. How strongly that is enforced, I can't say.

A related issue is that some PnP-ish camps who can't get placement try to game the system by trying to acquire SAPs from other camps, then using them to set up their own camps in open camping. This is *highly* frowned upon, and if caught, not only will the offending PnPers be tossed out and their SAPs canceled, the camp those SAPs came from can have all of theirs canceled and lose good standing with Placement. That may well be one reason your camp is being so careful.

In any case, if your camp is giving you a SAP, they are trusting you with a privilege. Accepting that SAP and then going off and violating your agreement with them is a dick move. If you don't want to live by the rules associated with their SAP, then don't accept it.

Just to be clear, I was not advocating for nothing but partying during EA, but if you build for 8-10 hours there is nothing wrong with visiting friends, and having few drinks before going to bed. If there was nothing but work and sleep many of the ESA people would not come.

Naked Zorb racing before Sunday is frowned upon. But a fella needs to stay hydrated.

Cheers.

You do realize that now that you have broken ePlaya radio silence, you have to go to the meet-n-greet.

Sorry, I don't make the rules.
