Re: The 2024 Burning Man Bar is open
Greetings all!
How about a sarsaparilly!?
Been a bit since I wandered thru these here parts but good to see the familiars! Our camp is taking an off year this year and possibly forever, mainly due to lack of interest from our group. I and a few other survivors have been invited to join M* A*S*H 4207th and we hope to do them proud! I hear we’ll be at 2:30 and C. Looking forward to not being the chief cat herder for a change! Look at me! I’m just attending! Woohoi!!

A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

Hi Pash! Hi Elorrum!
just back from planting 10 sequoias. I couldn't quite get a circle due to geology and topography, but still made an "area", planting them about 20-40 feet apart. I planted a couple here about 25 years ago, about 20' apart and their limbs are overlapping.
Patsh: yes, your camping spot is still nice, all green and grassy as of now.
Elorrum: yea, when digging the "duff" and soil to plant, I did not fine white tendrils of soil fungi. The area is not diseased or clear cut, so am hoping a nice balance is already in place. Soil is still moist only about 3" down. I watered each tree after packing dirt around the "dirt ball" they were it withing the containers I grew them in. I split the side and took the bottom off the containers, so the dirt they are used to stays mostly undisturbed, but the can send roots down to water asap. Splitting the sides of the container will allow it to open and be out of the way as (hopefully) the trees grow. I'll probably give them weekly or bi weekly (or as often as I can) watering over the summer to help them get established.
Your camp site is fine, too. a little wet down there this year, so nice and green and grassy.

Re: The 2024 Burning Man Bar is open
I had a nice time hanging out in a backyard, comfortable, with a vegetable garden, a big old tree. Tried out a cast iron wok shape bbq, the solid basics: hot dogs, cheeseburgers with garden fresh lettuce picked that moment almost!!!! Corn on the cob! Ice cream on a stick, cherries were a nice watermelon alternative, regular salty thin cut potato chips. Dang I was just thinking I should have accepted the cola beverage, that was a flavor I had missed in that. There was a cool mister, and some very cool new for ttitd gear!!! it was a doomier time spent on discussion of the holiday, than I recall. I was thinking of whizzing down the streets on bikes decorated with crepe paper in the wheels, on butterfly handlebars; the coolness rising from well watered lawns, green between homes separated by two car concrete driveways. Uncle Sam outfits, tall hats shiny stuff. (I would, if I were inclined to, shop for that shiny non moopy clearance stuff asap.
Wasn’t it a strange make a costume, decorate your ride, wagons too, flash mob kind of day? For a few years anyway. Traditions from years, really only a few generations, but to a kid… since time immemorial people had come to this empty dirt field (a recently plowed up orchard) next to the school parking lot for community fireworks rituals. Safe and sane for the most part. Different times.
Good thing the bar campfire is working. Hot dogs, pie irons, sticks, buns, condiments, cooler full of cokes, (which meant all kinds of canned sodas… Shasta and Cragmont were generic brands in my town). Big table outside through the weekend, if folks are camping out. Enjoy.

Today a friend and I went for massages, then to the mall for phone protectors, gyros, and some late stage capitalism at Torrid and Hot Topic.

Drove from Reno to Boise today. Fernley and Winnemucca were pretty quiet. I have 5 days to pack, then I turn around and drive back on Thursday for Friday entry. I've brought my brothers, my wife, and I can't believe I get to do this again, this time with my daughter!

Nice to see you all still keepin' on. Been years since I've come through these parts. Wanted to say a general thank you for the huge wealth of advice and knowledge (and cheeky snark, of course) you've imparted to me over the last fifteen years. Playa-bound from Portland tomorrow morning, and this will be my *checks notes* 8th burn. Husband's second burn. This one is our honeymoon
Cheers!

good to see you dropping in for a drink.
Should be a nice drive, looks like some rain for part of it? at least not too hot.

We're about to hit the road. Tuned in to BMIR online, sounds like things are already starting to dry but there's a little more drizzle potential this afternoon. We're looking to arrive at the gate road turnoff around midnight (from the north), and expecting (hopefully not to naively) for things to be good at that time.
Cheers

Well, here it is again. I’m watching it, some. Got their radio on, some. Feels like the next carnival on the calendar, catching my interest like the national kennel club dog show highlights, or the Olympics. Like that, then like a dull throbbing heartache too. I’m thankful the dog show part is in my mix this year.
I guess holding a bag of tickets one thought might make a little money for camp, or be traded for trailer towing, set up and tear down labor, and even maybe those empty ac shiftpod rentals (one does dream.) may sting a little, so I’m kind of enjoying seeing some shit rain on the playahs.

HI Elorrum! did you not go this year? For some reason I had thought you were?
I've heard from friends on playa, some rain, not so much to be a real bother though. Well, unless you panic or don't respect the mud...
Also some staff kerfuffles, those are always fun.

Nope, I sort of watched as tickets really loosened up, it felt like an outside possibility, I got kicked out of a fb ticket forum for calling out an admin’s frankly rude and desperate language which she was employing to sell about $12k of tickets and passes. A blessing to me, I believe.ygmir wrote: ↑Tue Aug 27, 2024 6:32 am*rides in on War Rabbit™*

I’ve been trying to get a near portable kit. Remember lemur’s suitcase burn thread?
I’m really turning towards lighter smaller. I’m no backpacker, but it just makes sense to use the tech for lightening and reducing the number of loads downstairs to my car in the alley. “Less” isn’t a burn tenet, but it’s interesting to sort stuff and see what I already own that can make it work. Camping more easily, could lead to camping more. (I heard an early burner’s oral history interview yesterday, a woman in a travelling circus who was not told that she was going to burning man.)
This new approach to a contained small already packed kit, It’s not a bug out gear “bad times are here” fantasy. It’s a “quick get in the car ask questions later” camping trip fantasy, where I am already packed! (Imagine!)
Felix’s bag camp.
The renegade group starts this Thursday, might maybe go see their thing. Patsh is going to visit after her burn, and that will be nice. If we could figure a way to see you too it would be awesome.
I tried a mug off peppermint tea with a packet of hot cocoa…it’s an item in my camp pantry now, in the rarely opened baggie of potential hot beverages.

Re: The 2024 Burning Man Bar is open
Well, I've turned out to be a bad friend and a bad burner. I had every intention of visiting Elorrum after the Burn. I caused her to miss Renegade, for which I am truly sorry. It was a lack of communication on my part. I was fighting a bad hip, which, for the past 3+ months, I was convinced was healed. Wrong! (torn ligament, according to the MRI.) Then the 2 herniated discs in my neck decided to make it difficult to use my right arm, and impossible to relax. That condition has come and gone so many times in the last couple of decades.
I'm amazed to have made it all the way home, driving asleep a lot of the way. Thank goodness for rumble strips in the roads! Bad idea to drive in that condition... I strongly advise against it.
Maybe I'm just not in shape enough any more to endure the Burns. I should accept that as fact, and be grateful for the 8 times I was able to go.

Patsh,
I'm really sorry to hear that everything went sideways for you at the burn this year. It's not an easy challenge to begin with, but when your body becomes contrary at the same time, it sure does take all of the fun right out of it. As FIG already said, the most important thing is that you made it back home safely. We are all grateful for that!
