HI mmsj2u
glad you stopped in.
yeah, loss is tough, and we need to deal with it in whatever way we can, and works best for us. There are no rules. So do what you gotta do.

RE Trilo's conversation: Ha, back when I did granite counter tops, I had a rule for my helpers, when on the job: "if something goes wrong, don't yell *%)^, yell "PERFECT". I'll know to come see, but it won't freak out others in the house...

So...
I have one ticket (in hand) available to be purchased.
It's at the 750 level.
I'd love for it to go to someone I know, but that's not likely to happen at this point.

If you (or someone you know and trust) are interested, please send me a message.
I'm sad not to be attending the Burn this year. It would have been my 9th year going.
(I've always loved the number nine)

Things here are hot, Hot, HOT and HOTTER. I'm not as tolerant of the heat as I once was.
Other than that, all's well. I'm growing a few vegetables for the first time, which is kind'a fun, but takes so much water to keep them alive. Water is precious here. They'd better be totally yummy! :)

yeah, I can relate to the heat intolerance.
So, it's hotter than usual? seems that's a hot place, anyway? Assuming you still live in the same place, that is.
yeah, you may have to develop some desert gardening techniques if you make it more of a hobby. Are you on a well?
So far out summer is not too bad, running at average temps, but I'm sure the heat is on the way. Looks like the Hof had a good rain storm yesterday, hoping that helps the little sequoias I planted last year get a good hold and roots before it all dries out.
Saw the coolest plant blooming on my way to the Hof the other day.......never seen it in all the years driving up there.

Is that Bear Grass? We have a similar plant here, but I've never seen them quite so full of flowers.
I hope your sequoias take hold! Will the elevation work for them? Seems high...
I'm still in the same place, and hope to be here for the rest of my life. I do love this house! By now, I'm spoiled rotten by having running (city) water, electricity, music, indoor toilets, washer/dryer, garage, etc., etc... after 32 years with none of that.
It does seem to be getting hotter, breaking records and such. Along with my diminishing tolerance for heat as I get older. I'm grateful for AC and fans!

Hey gang!

Good to see you guys!

It looks like most of us are getting some pretty hot weather these days! We have us one of those fancy heat domes over here in these parts too. Doesn't really cool down a lot at night at the moment. I recall talking with a certain eplayan, (the one who likes those British sports cars 8) ), and how 2022 in the desert was so miserably hot because they didn't get much of a break from it at night. Sounds tough. I wasn't there that year, nor 2017 either, but just hoping it is not like that at TTITD this year.

Yes, apparently I haven't had enough, so I'm headed back out again this year. Starting to get in the mood again, mostly from beginning to wrangle "all the things" in the garage and other points unknown. It seems 'One thing a day for Burning Man' brings a certain rote response somewhere between fun and panic!

Hope to see some of you out in the desert this year!

Cheers!

Hi Patsh. yeah, bear grass. lots of them scattered in the lodgepole pine and fern forest in that area, it seems. And all in bloom.
I hope the sequoias do well. I have two I planted about 6 years ago that seem to be doing well, and in the general area, the lumber company planted some in their replanting operations, that are up to 30 ish feet tall, and probably 20 years old or so. So, I have hope.
and yay for AC! I do all I can to not use it, in that I get a sore throat if I'm in AC for very long. So, it's a trade off for me.

Hi BVB!! Nice to see ya drop in!
I've been hearing about the "heat dome" back there....funny, how weather people come up with new names, to make things sound more dramatic. Not saying it's not horrid though. I hope it breaks soon for you all.
Good on ya for making the trek back to TTITD. That's a good long trek for you, and what a combo, road trip and TTITD....

got a nice sunrise photo on the solstice from the Hof, it turns out, sometimes, a dirty lens makes things artsy. The rays off the sun through a smudge ..

Nice photograph yg!

...and yes, for me anyhow, the road trip is part of the fun! Building up momentum and excitement on the way out, and especially on the way back when I have a little more time to visit some interesting places/parks along the way. It helps with the decompression too I think.

Patsh, I'm sorry you can't make it out this year. It's always great when I get to see you!

I'll miss seeing you, too, BvB! It's always such a treat to get to talk with you.
And for me, the drive there and back is always an adventure. Now and then throughout the year, I find myself daydreaming about being on the road, somewhere between here and the Playa. (...or the Hof, or the Amtrakathon...)
I know you'll have a great burn. It's getting closer!!

Greetings Bar Denizens!
Been a bit since I've popped in here. I hope all are doing well. We're bringing Destiny Lounge 3D back once again for 2025 albeit a little smaller. We've teamed up with the good camps in 404: Village Not Found and will be on Bradbury at 3:15. If any of you are still actually coming to TTITD, please do come by an say hello! Looking forward to seeing a few of you there!

We have more of a burrito bowl of heat in southern Nevada. The Las Vegas metro area is largely one giant bowl-shaped valley, and this time of year it's pretty good at getting up there. Not quite so good as someplace like Phoenix, but I think we've had triple digit temps every day for at least the last month. I think we may be seeing highs in the upper 90s by the end of the week, but we'll see how that goes.

We've also had a couple good dust storms in the form of monsoon weather. They can sometimes bring rain, but what we've gotten so far has just been high winds and dust devils. Thankfully our years of playa experience taught us well, our stuff was all secured and we took no damage.

Playa projects continue. I'm pleased with how things are going, but also simultaneously wish things were further along or we were just done already. We got a little break in yesterday to grab Sunday brunch at one of our local tiki bars, which happens to be celebrating its 10th anniversary. The decor's pretty amazing and over-the-top, and came as no surprise that it was done by fellow burner artist friend Barron Scott Levkoff. He's been working with them for years, and they bring him out a few times a year to go through the space and keep things fresh. Also, any excuse enjoy a fancy cocktail (or mocktail) and of course, to wear a fez :D

Hi gang!
Patsh: yeah some years, you made a few trips north! It was always nice to see you and visit. Good times for sure!

BBD!! Hi!! good to seeya poppin in. I'm glad to hear you camp is still coming back. And you've linked up with some great folks. Good for you! How long have you had Destiny lounge? I recall sheltering there in an epic dust storm, in either 07 or 08?

Hi Trilo! yeah, you picked a hot spot, though as you say, maybe not as hot as some. I've always disliked the heat of summer, probably because my work and life in general, keeps me outdoors for the most part, and working in that heat gets harder with age, it seems.
That dust must be a challenge at times, in urban type settings? Does it all "blow away" or do people have to sweep/wash driveways and sidewalks? Streets.

It's not as fine as playa dust, it's legitimate grit and dirt and debris and detritus. Add in a significant amount of dried leaves and Ponderosa pine needles and even pinecones. Bigger wind events can also blow lots of mulch and gravel around. Even when there aren't any dust storms, there's a fair amount of dust that generally kicks up and gets into the air and settles. It's not like snowfall, but accumulates to the point where there's something to sweep or clear with a leaf blower at least weekly.

Some streets get monthly cleanings, and fancier ones get them weekly. The city and county only take care of the primary streets, and the residents or their HOA's (homeowner's authorities) are left to fend for themselves. Since we live on a little cul-de-sac and don't have an HOA, the neighbors on our street just kind of take care of each other. If junk blows into ours or our neighbor's area, we pick it up and bunk it into our trash.

I don't mind the heat too terribly, and prefer that over cold weather. I've learned from contractors and gardeners, it's a function of managing shade and hydration, a loose long sleeve shirt (when working in full sun) and a good hat. Plenty of hydration and electrolytes is also par for the course. And of course also wearing mask and goggles when trimming some of the poor planting decisions of previous generations. Stuff like oleander was really popular when our house was built, since it can survive the conditions and provides shade. Great, but it's also poisonous to humans, dogs and cats and grows quickly.... and is nearly impossible to kill.

that's pretty great that you all just "take care of business" in your neighborhood! good on ya! It seems people have lost that, and feel "someone should do something", but, not them. I feel it also engenders "ownership" and sort of brings people together. We need more of that. Relying on "them/they" to do everything for us, IMHO, separates and isolates us, rather than the "community" that arises from shared work, and benefit of same.

The way they do things in Clark County (southern Nevada) is kind of interesting. Las Vegas proper is actually kind of small, and most of the metro area is unincorporated county land (the Las Vegas Strip, ironically, is not in the city of Las Vegas), so to keep all the property developers in check, for the last few decades they require property developers to have some kind of HOA in place to be responsible for things like resurfacing roads and fixing stuff on the street. I think the county does traffic lights, street lights, and main roads.

It seems like it could be a blessing or a curse, and I'm glad we live on a short street that was built before the HOA rule and can just do shit on our own. HOA's seem like they can be a nightmare. They can have monthly HOA fees in the hundreds of dollars on top of whatever a person might pay in rent or mortgage, and it's this elected body of neighbors who potentially makes decisions on repaving, no parking RV's on the street or in a driveway, or over a certain length, and other potentially petty rules (like assessing fines if they don't think your yard is being well maintained or your house needs to be painted). Of course, I've heard there are also some good ones out there that keep fees and rules to a minimum, but it's all something I'm glad we were able to avoid.

Our little cul de sac has turned out to be a pretty good little neighborhood. We're on the corner, and have a utilities corridor behind us, so we only have one neighbor adjoining our yard. Makes for things to be relatively quiet (barring the occasional kid crashing his car into a garden wall haha), and it was all built in a time when walls were a little thicker and the houses aren't close enough that you can reach out and touch the neighbor's place. The space also means Pani can do some gardening, and I've got space outside to work on projects, like the steampunk octopus piece I'm building for this year's event.

Hey Ygmir! Good to hear from you! Are you making it out this year?

This will be year 17 for Destiny Lounge although not every year was placed. We were Destiny Lounge Lite for a couple of years 2012 thru 2014. And last year we were a mere shadow of ourselves within the M*A*S*H 4207th camp. That was actually really fun even if our CO did get hauled off playa before opening with a broken hip and other unpleasantness.

Our camp has gone thru a few variations over the years since our first year in 2007 as most camps do. The first few years we served iced tea and lemonade each afternoon and I started my run of building large silly contraptions.

You may recall the Fling of Destiny in 2007 and 2009. For that one, you launched the world to it's possible fates using our patended Cat-a-flinger!

Rock Yer Balls made 7 or so appearances from 2008 until 2017. A tabletop labyrinth on steroids made into an 8' x 11' two player challenge. Rotting on a plinth in my yard after 10 or more installations and numerous upgrades.

There was the somewhat failed Oracle of Destiny in 2011. It was fun to put together but our programmer melted down and it never became what it was intended to be. He actually took the concept and all of our little video elements we made and made a working version that has been to several EuroBurns. I've not seen it except in pictures.

The Vortex of Destiny made it's debut in 2015 and we still have people asking for it's return. Last seen in 2018 on the Esplanade at 3:00. It lives in my storage container awaiting enough interested people to make it happen.

For 2019 I built the Temple uv Enlightenment that graced the 3:00 and G plaza and it came out again in 2022 for the 3:00 and B plaza. The Temple also languishes in my container awaiting a future use.

2019 was also the infamous year of the truck crash on our way to the playa. We still made it and had our camp up and running before opening although a little worse for wear. Don't look too closely at our sign as it still bears some scars.

While we always had blacklight and fluorescent items in our camp it wasn't until the Vortex and the addition of our 3D UV artist Debi Cable in 2015 that we truly became a 3D blacklight gallery. She did the artwork that graces both the interior of the Vortex and the Temple and it's her magical artwork that makes our camp sparkle and pop. In 2017 we officially became Destiny Lounge 3D.

That's a brief synopsis of our camp. It's been a lot of fun fraught with challenges to be sure. I've greatly enjoyed the creative outlet that BM has provided me since 2006.

Not sure now many more of these I have in me or if there will be any more "creations". Time will tell.
A plan is what you vary from.

Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

HI BBD!!!
well, for me and I'm sure others, your camp is, and always was, a delight.
I did love the "Rock your balls", and the other things you made! and a refreshing "Arnold Palmer" was a treat a couple of times.
Good on ya, for keeping it all going, and maintaining some of the "flavor" of the early years.

Hey there.

<looks around and finds a bottle of gin and other such fixings for a martini>

Hope everyone who is going is nearly ready for the burn. I'll be doing an orphan burn that weekend here in Michigan and thinking of you.

Cheers!!

HI Sput!
orphan burn, indeed. I've spent the time at my Hof these last years, with a smile while thinking of all the good times there.
And yes, safe travels, to all.
