Sometimes a person that seems the poster child for extroverted egotism is over compensating for poor self-esteem, or a feeling of inadequacy.

Sometimes the apparently self effacing poster child for humility is that way because of a overblown ego and his sense of superiority makes humility necessary to reinforce this feeling of superiority.
