What do you think?
Is this BORG2 thing just a attempt by the tail to wag the dog?
I'm the contraptioneer your mother warned you about.
Growing pains.
Frustration (founded and unfounded)
Exertion of 'share holder rights'
Something to bitch about
Protest against creeping mediocrity
Frustration at the growing numbers of people who go to the event to vicariously leech off the creative energies of others.
Something to bitch about
Attempts to exert control in a world in which we feel ever powerless over
Genuine concern by people who feel weel invested in the event
Just a few ideas...

That's nice list of control issues.

My take on it is just basically this:
"We want to try a different process for getting art onto the playa and see if it works. Carve us out a little space of our own and let us decide what goes into it without a lot of interference as long as we promise to abide by the safety and health requirements."
That is pretty much it. BORG2 are being given a piece of the playa and will have their own process for granting monies and placing art within that piece of the playa.

Villages are generally not allotted a chunk of the playa inside the Esplanade to place art as they see fit. Villages also camp in a set area and have theme camps and stuff. There is no such "thing" going on with BORG2. They MIGHT have some real estate where like minded people might camp in close proximity but it isn't central to the idea. Any camp or person anywhere in the city may align themselves with BORG2's method of art curation no matter where they camp.stuart wrote:I don't understand how this, in any way, is different from a village.
It isn't about camping. It's about art.

Wll, there is a certain amount of cooperation required. After all, borg1 has all the permits and insurance and is ultimately responsible for what happens there. It isn't like BORG2 has it's own event or anything. This is mainly about an experiment in a different art curation process involving democracy, transparency, and massive community participation and pooling of resources. It is hoped that it will allow more art to be placed on the playa at lower cost overall and with complete community involvement in the process. It is just a one-time demonstration of an alternative process.

BORG2 is a ONE-TIME experiment in PROCESS. It isnt about any CAMPS. They are goign to put art on the playa using a different PROCESS to get artists funded and get their art to BRC and get their art on the playa. That's really all it is about.
It is really all about this ... VOTE the people on the art council. Give money. VOTE for how the money is spent. VOTE for how the art is layed out. So rather than arriving at BRC and spectating at all the static art and stuff out there on the playa and maybe bitching about how lame it is, etc. BORG2 members will arrive at the playa knowing what to expect because they PARTICIPATED in getting the art to the playa. They can still bitch, though.
