Playa Snow

Post by Gizmo » Tue Jan 25, 2005 3:09 pm

Have been watching the weather channel, and it looks like the Playa has gotten some snow this winter. Does this mean less dust in August, or is it too early to tell?

It really depends on the spring weather but so far it is looking good for a low dust year. What you DON'T want to see happen is a hard freeze with no rain afterwards. When the playa freezes, ice crystals expand and cause the surface to "fluff up" when the ice melts. If it doesn't rain on that to matt the fluff back down, it is REALLY dusty.

I think it has more to do with ice load on the playa (if/when) its frozen over. Also has a lot to do with how long it stays cold and solid.
